Detroit's Chris Osgood is ready to call an end to his 16-year career.

The Red Wings have announced general manager Ken Holland and free-agent goaltender Chris Osgood will take part in a conference call Tuesday. According to reports, the veteran Osgood will announce his retirement from playing and take a position with the club as a goalie consultant.

The Detroit Free Press had reported Monday night that Osgood was returning as the backup to Jimmy Howard, but amended that report Tuesday morning.

Detroit is still seeking a backup goalie and reports have linked them to veteran journeyman Ty Conklin, but nothing has been finalized.

The team re-signed Joey MacDonald to a two-way contract earlier this month but has yet to find a more tested goaltender to share time with Howard.

Groin injuries limited Osgood, 38, to just 11 games last season backing up Howard. Osgood went 5-3-2 with a 2.77 goals-against average and .903 save percentage. He had sports hernia surgery in January.

Osgood has spent 13 of his 16 NHL seasons with the Red Wings, with whom he's won three Stanley Cups. He is second on the team's all-time list with 319 wins and 39 shutouts, and his 2.49 GAA is fourth all-time among Red Wings goalies who have skated in at least 100 games.

Last season Osgood became the 10th goalie all-time to win 400 games. In 744 games with the Red Wings, Islanders and Blues, he has 401 wins and 50 shutouts. His 74 playoff wins are eighth all-time, and his 15 shutouts are fourth.

The funny thing about Osgood is, he was never THAT goalie. He flew under the radar, and never did anything overly amazing. You would never pick him in your top 5, and he would be hard press to even be picked top 15 if you did a draft. Outside of Detroit, I don't think he is going to be a 'remembered' goalie. And I think for that reason he'll have one hell of a time trying to get into the Hall of Fame unless there is a weak class. Can't knock the 400 wins and 15 playoff shutouts though.

2007-2009 Playoff Osgood :fap::fap:

I love me some Wizard Of Oz. No, he was never the best goalie in the NHL at any point in his career, he wasn't flashy, and didn't get any hype at all. But he was all heart, and had an amazing career because of it.

I think he will get into the hall, first ballot, probably not, but he will get in.

401 Wins (10th all time)
74 Playoff wins (8th all time)
50 Career shutouts
15 Playoff shutouts
3 Stanley Cups

Those aren't HOF Caliber stats?

Led the league in GAA: 1 time, Top 10 5 times (24th all-time with a 2.49 GAA, 43rd with an adjusted GAA of 2.79)
Top 10 in shutouts: 5 times, never led. (24th all-time w/ 50 total)
Top 10 in Save %: 3 times (33rd career)

I don't know. Just screams mediocrity to me. He had a good long career, but as has already been said, there was pretty much never a point in his career where he was considered to be the best goalie in the league. As such, I can't see him being in the hall.

Top 10 in shutouts: 5 Times, lead once (69th all-time)
Top 10 in save %: 3 Times (74th all-time)

He only has 2 more wins than Ozzy and played 2 seasons longer, and has one more cup than Chris, people say Chris lucked out by playing for the Wings, but Fuhr played in net for the fricken 1980's Edmonton Oilers, didn't he luck out?

lol @ lucking out and then comparing the two when they played at two opposite ends of the spectrum in terms of goal scoring production. :smh: You can honestly wonder where the oilers would of went if they didn't have fuhr in net. Osgood though...

I'm honestly going to wait till it comes his time for when the hall votes come up before I put my two cents forward. The guy played behind some rediculous defensemen but his play during the 08 cup run was pretty much the star of his career (in my eyes anyways).
