College Football Playoff Discussion

This Tuesday, the third CFB playoff ranking was completed by the committee, and it's certainly looking interesting. Some things to note about it:

*It seems that there is no weight to Marshall's undefeated season, omitting them completely from the top 25 rankings. Some say that if Marshall goes undefeated, they have the right to be in the playoffs. Others point to their extremely soft schedule as a reason against it. Marshall deserves a higher bowl bid for sure, and that might actually be better than facing one of the top four teams and get blown out.

*FSU is bumped down to #3 in the rankings, as Oregon bypassed them for the #2 spot. I find this hard to believe, as FSU has done nothing but win, going undefeated and winning the National Title last year, with their last loss coming almost two years ago. Because of that, I would have them #1 in my ranking until they lose a game. Another thing I have a problem with is Oregon had a close game between Utah into the fourth quarter, I can't see moving Oregon up past FSU considering that as well.

*Many were counting the Big 12 out of a playoff spot, but they came back in a big way this weekend. Alabama almost losing to LSU paved the way for TCU to finish at #4, and Baylor has recovered from their upset loss at WVU and is ranked #7. Some are arguing that Baylor should be ahead of TCU, as TCU's loss came against Baylor. The opposition points to Baylor's loss to an unranked WVU as reason against it.

*Notre Dame continued their fall down the rankings, finishing at #18, with a three-loss LSU team ahead of them.

*Meanwhile, ND's opponent this past weekend, ASU, finished at #6 and is well within the discussion for the playoff. Provided they win out, with the big test being the final week against Arizona, ASU and Oregon will be playing for their playoff lives in the Pac-12 championship game.

*Rounding out the top 10 is Ohio State at #8, now the only Big Ten team in discussion for the playoff, after their victory over Michigan State. Auburn is #9 after their stunning last second loss to TAMU, and #10 is Ole Miss.

Even though its not the BCS anymore it always has and always will be what have you done for me lately?

TCU loses Oct 11, Baylor loses Oct 18.

Because TCU's loss was to #7 Baylor, while Baylor lost to an unranked West Virginia. I'm still looking into this, but if both TCU and Baylor win out, due to tiebreaker rules (and no championship game) Baylor would win the Big 12 championship, but TCU could make the playoffs if they committee selects them.

These rankings are nothing but a publicity stunt. The only time anybody should be concerned w/this is when the last one comes out. Till then, the committee is just trolling the nation's fans.

It's fun to talk about them, it's what's great about college football- evaluating everything that can happen.

Personally, I think the committee should do three rankings. A pre-season, mid-season and one to close the season. That way, prior rankings carry way more weight than doing them for the last half of the season.

Lightning already struck once with Georgia, I don't think it's going to happen again.

The whole "it causes more talk" argument college football purists brings up always annoyed me. They use that as an excuse for every stupid postseason situation they have in place. No other major team sport has a system like NCAA football & I don't see people having less conversations about them. Unfair systems aren't fun, they cause aggravation.

Alabama hops all the way to #1 after their victory over Mississippi State, who fall to #4 and would get their rematch if this was the final rankings. The committee, via spokesman Jeff Long, said the following: "With what we considered a decisive win over No. 1 Mississippi State, we really think that combined with their body of work put them into the No. 1 position."

FSU goes down to #3 despite being undefeated and last year's defending champs. Interesting to note that Clemson is the only team currently in the top 25 that they've beaten, as Notre Dame is off the list.

ASU fell quite a bit after their loss, which was a surprise to me. Another surprise was Ohio State passing Baylor despite their bye week. TCU's fall was expected after they struggled to victory against Kansas.

I was surprised to see Georgia back in the top 10, even though they handled Auburn. The top two loss team is Ole Miss at #8, with Auburn being the top three loss team at #14.
