ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Denver Broncos tight end Joel Dreessen says he isn't bothered by the Greeley school district's ban on his jersey number and others because they're associated with local gangs.

The district bans 13, 14 and 18 and their reverse, 31, 41 and 81. Dreessen wears 81.

The rule is three years old but made headlines this week after a third-grader wearing Peyton Manning's No. 18 was sent home to change.

Dreessen said Thursday the ban doesn't bother him if it prevents trouble.

Eighteen is in the name of the 18th Street gang, while 13 and 14 are associated with other gangs but not used in their names.

Eh, while this kid probably wasn't part of any gang, if a school district had to go so far as to ban certain jersey numbers, they probably had a gang problem. Personally, I don't see the big deal about not being able to wear a jersey to school. School should prepare you for life and you don't want to be that grown up who still wears a jersey.

Its not like the school banned the Peyton Manning jersey. they banned all #18 years before peyton ever got there. its no different then saying you cant wear red or blue or tank tops or sandals. In this particular case they said no to specific numbers due to gangs and possible violence.

Each school has a dress code, most schools have rules against wearing gang related clothing, in this case the gang has the #18 in its name, which means #18 jerseys aren't allowed.

I'm a teacher, I deal with dress code shit daily. Although frankly, I don't care unless it is something REALLY bad. I had a kid wear a banana costume through class and didn't bat an eye cause kids cared for like 30 seconds then moved on.

Problem with gang related clothing is that it can lead to serious issues. Someone wearing a pot leaf or whatever won't cause an uproar. Someone wearing gang colors or affiliations in an area with gang issues could cause major concerns. When I taught outside Detroit, I knew what things gang members would wear because we were told to send anyone who wore certain things or flashed signs to the office immediately before any fights would start. The same goes here.

This isn't the government trying to tell adults what to wear, this is a school trying their best to teach people without them attacking each other over the color of their shirt.
