Could Charlie Manuel win MOY this year?

I'm posing this thread because I heard it briefly on some annoying sports talk radio (not annoying because I didn't agree with them that Manuel should be it, just because they're annoying about it), and I'm curious what the general consensus here is. I know a lot of the "experts" will say Black, but to me, that's a shitty pick based on the fact that the "experts" pick crap wrong at the beginning all of the time, so the fact that the Padres actually did something shouldn't mean shit. I'll get into it more after some more posts (have to get back to work), but for now, I'm curious in what some others think.
 
92 wins with having Rollins gone most of the season, Howard, Utley, and Victorino each out for a month this season?
 
I'm biased, but of course Charlie should win MOY. 6 of his 8 regulars missed significant time to injury, the only ones that didn't was Werth who went through a slump that lasted 2 months and Ibanez who hit .229 in the first half.

Madson missed a shit load of time, Lidge was struggling big time early in the season, as was JC Romero, the only lefty in the bullpen. Despite giving a good amount of starting time to guys like Wilson Valdez, Juan Castro, Ben Francisco, Ross Gload, Mike Sweeney, Brian Schneider and others, he managed them to come back from a 7.5 game deficit to not only take over first place, but to completely blow past the Braves and now have a comfortable 6 game lead with 9 to play.

They will end up with more wins than they ever had in the regular season since 2007, when they won their first NL East title. It's absolutely amazing the Phils are where they are now despite everything that happened to them. And a big part of the credit has to go to Charlie.
 
If the Padres win the West I'd give it to their manager(who I don't even know at this time). They were supposed to be horrible this year.

That's the exact concept that I don't like. Why give them a pass because the "experts" got it wrong? And let's also not ignore the fact that the Manuel managed, injury plagued, went 22-10 against Black's division.

Also, just because "experts" say you should win, doesn't mean you should not win MOY. Plenty of guys in the past (Cox, for example) have won during their teams period of dominance. What Manuel has managed to do despite the injury bug is astounding. Especially when you consider the fact that at midseason many "experts" and fans alike were writing the Phils off, and they now have 1) the best record in the NL; 2) a better record than any other their previous years. And the season isn't even over yet.

A fluke season (which this SD one could be) should not definitely get you MOY just because no one saw it coming.

All of that said, I think Charlie SHOULD win it, but ultimately won't and it will end up going to Black or Baker. Baker I could at least stomach, albeit barely. Black I would be irritated by it.
 
The Phillies are 4th in Payroll I believe (I know you had injuries)

The Padres are 29th

It would be the biggest story in baseball if the Padres managed to hang on and win the division with this shitty roster.

The payroll argument is moot because the majority of the big names on the Phillies roster are guys that they brought up from their farm system (Victorino, Rollins, Utley, Howard, Hamels, even Ruiz, but his contract isn't much). Yeah they signed Halladay in the offseason, but only after giving up Cliff Lee and some highly touted prospects. Oswalt barely even counts against their payroll this year.

I can't punish the Phils because they have great talent from their system that are finally getting paid. The Padres might BARELY win a crappy division that no one seems to want. That doesn't equal MOY in my opinion.

The Payroll argument was less of a negative towards Manuel and more of a positive towards Black

The Phillies have done a great job of bringing players up and spending what money they do have wisely [in most cases] but when your team is spending less than the Kansas City Royals, Cleveland Indians and Oakland Athletics and YOU ARE STILL winning a decent division then you deserve alot of credit imo
 
It really should be Gardy in the AL and Bud Black in the NL.

Manuel has done a great job but Gardy dealt with losing his all-star closer and his power bat in July and went on just an absolute tear and Bud Black and the Padres have competed despite one of the worst payrolls in baseball.
