Seems like an unnecessary risk at this point. Nothing like giving 60 million to a kid who has seen his plate discipline and BABIP decline every year. Not to mention that he is terrible defensively, and will be playing a different position in seven years.
 
One of the most outstanding pure swings in baseball right now, I get the investment. He's got what it takes to stick at SS for the next ten years and presumably his maturity will tick up. At the least you get that enormous upside at a premium position. Solid deal in my eyes.

Basically...he's a Manny-esque jack ass on and off the field right now, but the risk/reward + positional value justifies the contract for me.
 
No it's not an outrageous contract in the large scheme of things, but I think it's unneeded to put that kind of money on the table for a player whose statistics, maturity and work ethic has not only failed to improve, but declined since he was promoted to the major leagues three years ago. I think it's unlikely that Castro would have done anything to really increase the asking price over the next year or two.

Castro has actually been pretty good defensively this year after a rough start.

Offensively this year its been pretty bad.

BB%: 5.7, 4.9, 5.2, 3.7

Combine that with below average to negative baserunning and fielding value and we have a pretty crappy player.
 
It's almost as if it's a bad idea to bank on someone who derives 95% of his OBP from his batting average and doesn't walk or hit for power to continue to be useful going forward ...

Even Dom Brown, who had no walks in May, still has more walks than Castro right now.
 
After a round of golf on Saturday, we had lunch in the clubhouse, the Cubs/Astros game was on tv. Some guy at the bar started talking about how good he thought Starlin Castro was, he said he was just like Robinson Cano. lol.

Same guy also said that former Astro, Chris Johnson is a great player.
