Tampa Bay Bucs News: Da'Quan Bowers And Arrelious Benn Pass Physicals, Cleared For Camp

Categorize these two news items in the No Big Surprises Here, But Still Good News category. According to Pewter Report and BHSN, Da’Quan Bowers and Arrelious Benn have both been cleared as healthy and can participate in training camp.

Da’Quan Bowers was the Tampa Bay Bucs’ second round draft pick in this year’s NFL Draft, but the only reason he fell so low in the draft was due to health concerns. Bowers had been considered one of the top defensive players in the country, but then suffered a knee injury and required offseason surgery this past year. Despite continued concerns over his knee in the media, Bowers has been claiming for months that his knee is fine:

My knee is fine. It’s way ahead of schedule. it took some time to get my strength back. But I’ve been going through rehab and working out ever since January when I had the surgery. It’s finally back to the shape where I can run and cut like I am supposed to. It feels great, and I’m looking forward to being in Training Camp. No setbacks as to why I should'nt be in Training Camp. So everything is a full go from here. NFL.com interview

As for wide receiver Arrelious Benn, he spent the offseason rehabbing after tearing his ACL in Week 16 last season. His recovery has been quick to this point, but the Bucs will still likely take it slow with him and all him to recover at his own speed. As of today, though, Benn is claiming he expects to be ready to open the season with the club.

Benn looked good before he got injured. Overrated is relevent to how good he's perceived. I mean, how good is Golden Tate perceived now compared to college? Bowers is a different animal. No one trusted his knee to hold up at the draft, and his fall was GIGANTIC. It doesn't strike me as a Marcus McNeill-type mountain out of a molehill thing. I think he'll have 3 good years, then go in for major surgery and probably miss the better part of a year. Like was talked about HEAVILY pre-draft.

Wrong on all fronts.

1) Benn did not look good before he got injured.
2) Benn is injury-prone, which is not an excuse, its a detriment.
3) Overrated is relevent to draft position. Benn was a high draft pick who did little.
4) LOL at comparing NFL players to how they were perceived in college. If thats the criteria, then 95% of the guys in the NFL are overrated.

Tate was a 2nd round WR who got forgotten about pretty quickly when he didn't produce immediately. I call it Limas Sweed syndrome. And Benn got 200 of his 395 in the last 3 1/2 games he played in, including his first 100+ yard game. He was improving. Whether or not he looked good is, again, relevant to how good you expect a 2nd round rookie to look.

Thats always the sign of a great NFL WR. When he doesn't actually play WR and he's "probably a gunner on ST".

I remember a couple years ago New England went undefeated in the regular season, and Randy Moss caught 25 TDs despite not seeing the field until week 7 and playing gunner on ST.

I'm not in the business of defending the Buccaneers anymore. Nor am I in the business of coming to BigBucs aid, but, I do feel it is necessary to point out some numbers.

Benn actually played pretty good when given the opportunity. He only had 25 catches, but, he snagged 65% of the balls that came to him. Mike Williams, on the other hand, caught just over 50%. This number does not take into account overthrows. However, Benn also led the team in YAC avg. Each reception led to about an additional 6.5 yards after the reception. Also, higher than Mike Williams. Neither player is terribly spectacular in that department as they aren't necessarily explosive players. They are bigger, physical receivers. Finally, Benn also had 5 catches go over 20+ yards in limited playing time. Over the last 5 years or so, most league leaders in receiving yards averaged about 18 catches of 20+ yards.

I think it is a valid argument to say he played well in limited playing time. What the future holds for him, I don't know. It was one season, but, he did play well when given the opportunity and I would think he will earn more reps this season based off of his performance last season.

Since I am in the business of not coming to BigBucs' aid, I would like to point out the following...

Benn started 9 games last year
1 game he had over 100 yards
1 game he had over 50 yards (1 catch, 53 yards)
His high-catch game was 4.

Benn played in 15 games last year
He had 8 games when he had 1 catch or fewer

He had 2 TDs all year

Those are terrible numbers.

Benn was slow to pick up the offense(is that really uncommon for a rookie WR coming from a spread offense?), so regardless of how many games he appeared in or started he was not really out there all that much. He was on the field for 360 snaps(for comparisons Mike Williams was out there for 955). Thats 24 snaps a game. Account for the snaps where they put him out there early in the year because of trick type plays like reverses or having him out there because hes a better run blocker than all of the other WRs... He didn't have all that many opportunities to actually catch the ball(37 targets on the year). Once he started to "get it" late in the year he played well. And people are saying he didn't? Watch some Bucs games before you comment on this stuff.
