There was an issue with Davey Richards and Future Shock Wrestling in England. When Richards did his tour of the U.K. a few months back, he wrestled for the promotion against its champion, Jack Gallagher. During the match, there was an accident and Gallagher ended up being knocked out. Richards, to save the match, had no real choice but to pin Gallagher and win the championship. It wasn’t what they wanted but it was understood it was the only real option at that moment. Richards agreed to come back to drop the title. Their owner, Dave Pownall, claimed Richards pulled out two days before the planned rematch saying he wasn’t going to get on the plane for “anything less than twice the agreed fee.” Between that and the cost of flying him in, they said they couldn’t afford it. They asked, since the booking had fallen apart, if Richards could at least send in a video. Richards sent a video via e-mail 20 minutes after the show started. They had to get Internet access to download it and edit it and with the exception of the guy doing the editing, nobody saw it until it was played at the show after the main event ended. The sound and video quality wasn’t good and the video was not the outline of what they had asked him to say, but instead his running down the company. Richards sent an e-mail to Damien Smith of the promotion on 10/5 saying, “I’ve told you and Dave now, that I am not coming over because we could not agree on the price. Like I said before, since I am champion, my price has to go up so my old fee needs to be at least doubled before I come over.

Man I use to respect him as a wrestler and in some ways I still do, but it's hard to really root for a guy who is such a chode.

Sounds like he took a bad bump or got smacked in the head. Even though Thesz was a bad ass, any guy could be knocked out under the right circumstances.

Im not trying to make excuses for Davey here, because to me this is pretty grimy and about as low as it gets, but knowing the guy is based in the U.S., maybe they should have ran an angle that night and did another quick switch.

Im sure shit like this happened all the time in another era, its not like holding up promoters isnt a wrestling tradition of sorts, but in 2012 arent we beyond this crap? I mean, if you dont want to fly back out there, at least shoot the angle and cut the promo they ask you to cut.

That's the video he sent to the promotion to run during the show.

Now i'm leaning work. He brought up the Iowa shit and it feels like he's turning it into a gimmick. I get the sense this is an attention grab by the promotion. Especially if they magically reach his price next month.

Also, note the subtle use of the New Japan shirt, the other promotion he fucked over and was fired from due to the "car accident" that either never happened, or at the very least didn't injure him because he worked the same weekend in the U.S.

Also, are we really to believe that the promotion didn't watch the video before they played it for the fans? And now it's leaked on the internet?

If it's not a work, Davey Richards is the biggest asshole of all time.

The story in the OP is from the Observer, btw. Obviously sent in by the promoter.

There are only two reasons the promoter would do that.

One, to out Richards as a creep.

Two, to push their storyline. Have you ever heard of Future Shock Wrestling before this story broke? Do you think they might have gotten a few website hits off of this, or sold a few DVD's of Richards knocking the dude out, or will sell a shit ton of tickets & DVD's if they book Richards to come back?

This smells to me.

Well, im not the only one who thinks the whole thing is a work...from the Observer this week:

Regarding the Davey Richards incident with Jack Gallagher, everything sounds like a work to me. There was an interview in Powerslam magazine regarding the idea that Richards accidentally knocked him out and thus won the title he wasn’t supposed to win based on the article in last week’s issue. Richards responded to that by saying, “Em, no, it wasn’t an accident. He intentionally head-butted me, so I intentionally head kicked him. I guess it was an accident he got knocked out. But I was trying to tell him in no uncertain terms, `Don’t head-butt me.’ I knew exactly what I was doing. I meant to kick him. It is what it is. Now, I’m the Futureshock champion.” After seeing a tape of the interview Richards sent in, it sure came across like the whole thing was a work, or if the original thing was an accident, it’s being turned into a work because the promo was such. It came off like Richards playing heel saying that since he was the champion he wanted double the money, and the promotion doing that as a storyline to explain Richards not being there as was advertised for the show. It’ll all come out as either Richards will return soon and it was a work, or he won’t and then maybe it wasn’t.
