Carr spent Friday and Saturday visiting with the 49ers, but he left without a contract.

Carr is from nearby Bakersfield and played at Fresno State before becoming the No. 1 overall draft pick by the Texans in 2002. Carr spent five seasons with the Texans before stops with the Panthers (2007) and Giants (2008-09).

Carr is expected to back up Alex Smith in San Francisco.

Interesting dynamic since last week Patrick Willis said the 49ers had 3 QBs who were better than David Carr.
 
Makes sense, If Alex Smith ever goes down they won't want to change their entire offense to fit Shaun Hill's strengths. So they sign David Carr. Shaun Hill will probably be traded for a late round pick or released.
 
Probably will release him. I didn't want to sign David Carr though. Alex Smith better not get injured this season.

Of course, he probably got injured once he read that the Niners signed Carr.

I'm not sure if he ever gave a damn about playing.

Couldn't stand him in college, or the NFL. He had ''bust'' written all over his ass from the very start. Oh, but it's the lines fault, of course. I'm surprised the Rams didn't sign the guy, to make me even more miserable.
 
Carr was a great back-up and played well whenever he got a chance to step on the field for the Giants.

I liked him, so there.
 
Its all moot, Nate Davis will be the opening day starter anyway. I hope not, actually, but I hope he does win the #2 spot

I still say to this day Carr would have been a good QB if he had started with any team but the Texans (or Lions).
He was on the run for his life every game with that team.
You could make the argument his throwing mechanics are off, but that doesn't seem to hurt Philip Rivers (who was developed the right way).
 
There are a few QB's in the league with bad mechanics, and it hasn't hurt their legacy.

Phillip Rivers was incredibly accurate in college. He was compared to Bernie Kosar in terms of side-arm delivery, but Kosar was a damn good NFL QB, too.

McNabb was great in college, but I wouldn't put him on the same level as Rivers when it comes to accuracy. This kind of shows up in the NFL, too, where McNabb will have long stretches of one-hopping passes to WRs.

Vince Young had a nice last season in college, but he's nowhere near Rivers or even McNabb in terms of accuracy. He's actually probably closer to Tebow (albeit better).
 
the biggest problem with Tebows mechanics is that it takes him 3 days to go through the whole motion...the only QB I can think of with a similar motion is Lord Byron and look how his NFL career has turned out, despite being a more polished passer than Tebow. Having a windup longer than that of many MLB pitchers is a much more blaring mechanical issue than throwing at a slightly different angle and having your release point being a little off. Combine that with his lack of experience taking snaps from center, and that is the vast ajority of the mechanical issues with Tebow. They are completely different than the issues someone like Rivers has. Rivers cam from a much more pro style offense, is a more accurate passer, and is a much more traditional pocket passer than Tebow. Its two completely different situations with the only similarity being that they both happen to have atypical motions that are completely different from each others. One motion is slightly off (Rivers) the other is a potentially huge problem (Tebow), especially with the speed of NFL defenses and the timing required by many NFL offenses.
