Tampa Bay Buccaneers cut RB Derrick Ward

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers cut RB Derrick Ward, just 18 months after making him a big free-agent acquisition.

Ward rushed for just 419 yards last season in Tampa, one year after collecting 1,025 yards for the New York Giants.

Bucs head coach Raheem Morris had expressed displeasure with Ward earlier this month when he said the running back's poor performance was the result of bad conditioning.

Morris announced Ward's dismissal on Tuesday afternoon. "We shook hands and wished each other well on out future endeavors," he said of informing Ward, via the St. Petersburg Times.

I don't think he fell off as much as the Bucs were foolish in thinking he was a good back. Cue W2B's "RBs are a dime a dozen and interchangeable in today's NFL" theory.
 
its hard to be a good running back when you are on one of the worst teams in the league and have no talent surrounding you. i still think hes a solid player but hes no Steven Jackson.
 
Ward was overrated even as a Giant, he had the great pleasure of running behind a phenomenal line who was clicking on all cylinders.

He also enjoyed treading in Brandon Jacobs' wake. Shit I could probably pick up a few first downs on a defense that has been trying to tackle Brandon Jacobs for three and a half quarters.

It is true.

There are very few backs in the league that actually are irreplaceable, and even then, they are replaceable, just really good.

Look at all of the system of backs in the league. You can replace the stud, high priced back, with 2 or 3 backs that give you similar results.

Sorry but that doesn't prove your point. How does Bryant sitting on the sideline help Derrick Ward get yards? And even when he did play, he didn't play like he did in 2008. And even one decent player isn't going to do a whole lot in the way of taking away teams from stacking the box.

I remember last year, about this time, when Derrick Ward was the "sexy" "sleeper" to put together a Michael Turner-type season. Free agent, takes over starting role and becomes a Top Ten rusher. I remember Ward going in the late first round.

A lot changes in a season. Still think Bucs will be surprisingly good this year. Not over .500, but maybe 6-10 or 7-9.

I totally agree with this. Success on the ground is mostly contingent on the talent you've got on the offensive line. Every running back in the NFL, from Chris to Rudi Johnson, is an unbelievable talent. The skill set doesn't vary all that much in the top 30-40 backs in the game, but what does vary is the offensive line. Perfect example is Cedric Benson 'coincidentally' exploding the same season as the Bengals line became a revelation with Whitworth and the rest. The incredible success of Thomas Jones with the Jets, the emergence of Tashard Choice, etc. etc.

this is very true. look at the running game of the 08 Giants when they had one of the best lines in the game and the 09 Giants when the line was injured and showed signs of age.
