Michael Jordan did so much for the game of basketball. He was the main reason why the sport/league became popular here in the states and overseas (especially in asia). He was the greatest of all time and his image is the reason why the game was so popular. Look at the ratings for the league the year after he retired from the Bulls the 2nd time. I'm pretty sure the ratings dropped 10-20 percent. All from one guy.

Yeah I have a newfound respect for LeBron. I never really liked him before and thought he was an arrogant guy. I guess he does have some respect.

Wilt was MJ and Bron is going to be MJ during our time. A number shouldnt be retired on basketball alone IMO. The precedent was set by Jackie Robinson and baseball and MJ is not Jackie Robinson.

I gree with both of these.

LeBron is the corniest athlete in the league. How are you gonna chose to wear #23 to pay homage to MJ, then a few years later say you're not gonna wear it anymore for the same reason? Then say you're gonna wear #6 instead like that number is insignificant. Everything this dude says seems fake and forced.

And no #23 shouldn't be retired. The Heat retired #23 to honor Jordan, he didn't even play for them and knocked them out of the playoffs routinely in the 90's. Real lame of them to retired his number.

That said, you have a lot of other people you'd need to retire their jerseys for. You don't completely retire a number unless there's a world altering reason (Jackie Robinson).

There's a reason why teams retire player jerseys. MJ is going to have #23 retired by the Bulls, and that's all he needs.

Jordan did more for the media then the NBA. Talent like his comes around every few decades. Only difference from the past is that Nike and Gatorade shoved him down our throats and fancy jingles were created like "I wanna be like Mike."

Michael Jordan is great, no doubt, but Gretzky's accomplishments eclipse Jordan's by a mile.

If Jordan did what Gretzky did in his prime, Jordan would have averaged 55 ppg ... that's how dominating Gretzky was in his prime.
