Interest is already said to be "huge'' in ultra-talented Diamondbacks outfielder Justin Upton, according to sources.


The Diamondbacks, who are on the cusp of the race in the NL West, don't have to trade Upton and are said only interested in making a "perfect'' deal. But it was recently reported by FOXSports.com the team might entertain offers.


Sources say Upton's limited no-trade list isn't the same as the last time the Diamondbacks entertained trade requests a year and a half ago. It was reported at the time that his four-team list of teams he could veto a trade to consisted of the Tigers, Indians, A's and Royals. Detroit is one team that would have the interest and wherewithal to do a deal.


Two winters ago, one of the trades the Diamondbacks considered was with the Red Sox for Jacoby Ellsbury and Daniel Bard.


Upton is hitting .267 with seven home runs and 36 RBI. Arizona, the defending NL West champion, is five games out in the division lead with a 41-43 record.


Upton's in the middle of a six-year, $51.25-million deal that runs through 2015.


It seems somewhat unlikely the Diamondbacks would make a deal involving Upton as they remained in the race.

Upton is interesting, because he is under performing badly, but will require a huge package of prospects. It's an odd pairing for any contender shopping for help. Any team that trades for him better be confident he is going to turn things around quickly.

I'd be very wary of him and would not surrender a package of top prospects.

This is not a buy low situation, they want a lot for him. With that said, he's 24 years old with a couple of big seasons under his belt, so obviously he's a tempting player.

Seriously though, why is there such a push to trade him? He's under a pretty reasonable contract through 2015. He's only 24. He's have a good season this year. The Diamondbacks have two good pitching prospects in the minors that will be contributing in the next year or two. And it's not like the NL West is dominant division or something. The DBacks can clearly compete in it. Don't understand the desire to dump him for guys who haven't proven anything in the major leagues. If he were in the final year of his deal, okay, maybe. But not when he's not even in his prime yet and is still under contract for 3 more seasons.

The thing with Upton is you are getting a player who hasn't hit their prime and is in the middle of a reasonable deal, and will be under club control for another 3.5 seasons. That also works against any team trying to trade for Upton, because the Diamondbacks have no motivation to move him except for an offer they can't refuse. And for a struggling player right now, I wouldn't make the move because it would cost too much.

Then again, I am also thinking about my favorite team. The Orioles are very top heavy, possessing two of the top five prospects in the game according to most (Bundy and Machado) and the high minors are pretty bare, with some early success this season in the international market. From that perspective, the Orioles aren't moving either at the top and don't have the depth to make a deal. For a team that has more to offer, it is definitely worth a look.

I don't see why they would, they have a ton of young pitching talent coming through the pipe and they are still a pretty solid club overall. No reason they can't compete for the next 4-7 years with this group.

Are we saying that Justin Upton has peaked and is already starting to regress? He's 24. I was sort of expecting him to repeat last year's performance. Or at least have a performance between last year nad 2010. Something in the 4-5 WAR range
