There are reports circulating that Doug Furnas, one of the regular stars of the 90s All Japan glory period, passed away in his sleep last night. Furnas was 50.

The first report was listed by David Haskins, a Tennessee area pro wrestler who said he got the information from Mike Furnas, Doug's brother, who was also a pro wrestler.

Furnas was a college football star at the University of Tennessee who became one of the greatest powerlifters of all-time, breaking more than two dozen world records during his career. He then switched to pro wrestling when Kevin Sullivan was booker of the Knoxville territory.

He wrestled all over the world, with stints in WCW and WWF, but was best known for his tag team with Phil Lafon aka Dan Kroffatt, in All Japan, WWF and ECW. In the All Japan days, the two were one of the best tag teams of all-time.

Furnas had been battling Parkinson's Disease for many years.

Damn. Gotta admit I first saw him when he and Lafon came to WWF in 96 or 97 and even though they were injury ridden, they still looked like an awesome old-school team.

One of my absolute favorite aspects of mid-90s All Japan was LaFon and Furnace. Really sad. An absolutely great tag team and sadly one that so many North American fans just don't know about.

You've seriously never seen that match? That was the first Furnas & Kroffat match I remember watching. That's one of the best tag matches of the 1990s.

Slipped through the cracks for me.

I saw people raving about it on another forum, saying exactly what you are saying, and holy shit is it good.

The thing is, you could argue Kobashi is the least impressive person in the match...Kikuchi is out of this world, selling his ass off, and Furnas & Kroffat are so awesome being smug heels.

Kikuchi was so good during this era, so under appreciated. He is actually back in All Japan these days, old as fuck and working as a dirty, cheating, veteran heel. It was weird seeing him young again.
 
That was one of the first actual puro matches I watched. I read the detailed breakdown on Ditch's site and it mentioned the crowd. But after watching it and then other All Japan matches from the same era, the crowd difference was notable.
