Drew Bledsoe: Hall of Famer?

Interesting case I think.

Using the eyeball test I say no. I say this because while being good I don't remember him being great.

He's not the greatest, but I would consider him a Hall of Famer

My argument is that he has a little bit of both - success winning/championships and statistical success, some guys have gotten in for being outstanding in one or the other, why not a guy who was just plain good, had a shot at a super bowl but played against THE great of the time Favre, and later played a huge role in the AFC Championship game getting the Pats their while Brady was injured.

Guys dont get in to the HOF for losing to great players or being a great sub for part of a game. He doesn't pass the eye test and his numbers are borderline at, best.

They measure up similarly to McNabb.

Just like for McNabb, I have always liked Drew Bledsoe and respect the hell out of his accomplishments on the field but Hall of Fame worthy? Don't think so.

The 1st half of his career was good to almost great, the second half was below average to above average. Not sure if he was ever considered the best QB in the league at any point in his career. Plus, he doesn't have a SB win to make up for his negatives.

For me he's not in. Will he get in? I doubt it.

I think that's a ratherly high odd standard though. He was playing in an era with Favre, Warner, Brady, Manning, Young, etc etc. For Bledsoe not to be "the best in the NFL" at any point in time while not a plus I don't think can really be considered a slight. No one is saying he is one of those guys. Just that if he belong in the HOF.

The advanced stats don't help Bledsoe much though either.

Yep, beyond the comebacks and GWD, McNabb is in the same ballpark (and threw less picks). Point is, neither is a HOFer at first glance.

I guess you could argue Bledsoe was a compiler but his stats aren't even that awesome.

I'm just saying in my perfect world the HOF is filled with players that are considered the best players in their era. He doesn't fit that criteria. However a lot of these "Hall of Fames" have turned into the "Hall of Good", which is why I don't completely shut the door on him getting in at some point. He had a good career. But when he is being measured along with the best players in NFL history, which is what the HOF is supposed to be, I don't think it's unfair to bring up the fact the guy was never considered the best QB in the league at any point in his career.

Now you can bring up my posts on Curtis Martin and say I'm talking out of both sides of my mouth because I support his HOF credentials and admit he was never the best HB in the league at any point. And thats fair. But, I think Martin's longevity and the fact there was no drop off towards the end of his career puts him in that class, because that's something you've never really seen.

Fair point and Martin was uber productive basically his entire career outside of what? One season? Bledsoe on the back half of his career had some par or sub par seasons relative to the era. I'm not sure how sold I am on him getting in. If he got in I wouldn't be surprised as to me he has some really nice career totals and never got the rep like Vinny did of hanging around for 20 seasons and compiling numbers. Bledsoe played a while, fell off then basically retired when he likely could have hung around another 5-7 years collecting a pay check but didn't. I think the odds are against him getting in but I could see a year where the class is a bit weak and Bledsoe gets in.

I think you could argue that Bledsoe was only ever in the top 3 QBs in the league one season (1996). I find it hard for him to pass the eye test to be a HoFer.
