EA senior director of corporate communications John Reseburg has told VentureBeat. “Yes, we’re discontinuing Online Pass. None of our new EA titles will include that feature.”


Interestingly, Reseburg claims the decision is based on consumer feedback. “Initially launched as an effort to package a full menu of online content and services, many players didn’t respond to the format. We’ve listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward.”

but its not just GS anymore...most stores sell used games. I wonder that the fact they will give you 50-100% more for your used games (during promotions) means they are making that much $ from selling them.....such a high mark up, they can offer more in credit to have you buy from them.

edit: what I do see hurting used game sales is that new games will go on sale or even be repriced lower so soon after release. I can't remember in the past so many games being so cheap, soon after releasing. OK games will be cheap and Good/Great games will often be priced $15-20 cheaper.

And EA doesn't care about any of those retailers either. There will still be Targets and Wal-Marts for people who need to have a copy of the game (which will likely digitally tether itself to the owner's system right when it's first played) but most games in the near future will likely be digital purchases.

Like most have eluded to, I'm sure this has more to do with the next gen consoles offering developers that option of having DRM for their games. You needed to be online to use the Online Pass anyway so...

EA is reportedly working on eliminating the online pass requirement for titles that have already been released

EA has told Eurogamer it is in the process of eliminating Online Pass from all its existing titles.

"As we discontinue Online Pass for our new EA titles, we are also in the process of eliminating it from all our existing EA titles as well," a spokesperson said. "We heard the feedback from players and decided to do away with Online Pass altogether.

"Players will see it first with some EA Sports titles, where a prompt to enter an Online Pass code will no longer appear in-game; with other titles we are simply making Online Passes available free of charge online.

"These are rolling updates that are taking effect over the next several weeks. We hope players continue to enjoy our games and online services for a long time to come."

For XBox One the game needs to be installed and then the only way you can install it onto another system is by paying a fee.

Exactly. EA isn't worried about the online pass because you have to pay to play the game on another console when next gen launches. They basically sell another copy because the price is the same as the new copy of the game from what I have seen.

At least for PS3 and Xbox 360 games we won't have to worry about the online pass any longer.
