Ed Reed - Neck injury gets worse

The chances of Ed Reed returning to the Ravens next year seem to have taken a turn for the worse over the weekend.

While at the Super Bowl XLIV festivities, Reed told the NFL Network that the nerve impingement in his neck has worsened and that he’s still undecided on whether he will retire.

Reed, 31, said the pinched nerve is affecting his ailing hip, which was just one of the multitude of injuries that kept Reed out of four regular season games in 2009.

“I still have to see doctors,” Reed told the NFL Network. “I still need to talk with Ozzie [Newsome] and the Ravens.”

The Pro Bowl safety also conceded that he has considered retiring the past two years. Days after the Ravens’ playoff exit on Jan. 16, Reed said he was “50-50.”

This all comes on the heels of Head Coach John Harbaugh saying for a second time this offseason that he expects Reed to return.

“Ed is going to hear me say it, and maybe he’d say something different, but I believe Ed is going to play next year,” Harbaugh said last Wednesday. “There is no better leader, there is no better football player, there is no better guy on our team than Ed Reed, and we need him back. He’s a huge part of our puzzle.”

I was thinking the same thing. No SB rings and only 8 years. It's hard to ignore 46 INT's and 8 TD's though. Right now I would say he's a borderline HOF'er leaning towards not getting in. If he can play for 2 more years I'd put him in though.

He's been thinking about retiring even before this injury, yeah it would suck to not have such a good player with good years still left but u gotta respect a guy wanting to leave on his own terms realizing that he still has a long ass life to live and prob doesn't wanna fuck his body up any worse. I still think he'll be a HOFer one day even if he doesn't play another snap, he just won't be one soon.

Good point. If he retired today, he might not get in the HOF for awhile, but eventually he would get in. You gotta think his career was about as good as Derrick Thomas.

Without question imo. He has been the best ball hawk on defense since he came into the league.

Would be sad to see him go, I really like watching him play. But the mans gotta do what he thinks is right.

If he does retire it'll be sad to see because he was a amazing safety and I'll glad he at least played for the Ravens and put up great numbers.

At least he's smart enough to realize he should quit while he's ahead. It's really sad looking at some of these retired players who's bodies are like 30 years older than they are

Idk. Unlike Bob Sanders, he's been a consistent producer. I think he could be a hall-of-famer if you really look at the stats. 387 tackles, 46 interceptions, nine interception touchdowns, 99 passes deflected, 9 forced fumbles...

And I think it's unfair to put the lack of rings on his shoulders. He's a six-time Pro Bowler and four-time All-Pro... In the playoffs this year and last year, the offense fell apart.

This year, for instance, they started-off decent, throwing against eight-man fronts. But, as soon as the Colts got out of that, it seemed like Harbaugh forgot to run the ball... even with Ray Rice, Willis McGahee, and Le'Ron McClain on the team. cslap:

I think he's got Hall of Fame numers. He's third in active players in interceptions. Sharper has 63, Ty Law has 53, and he has 46... Sharper's played for thirteen years, Law's played for fifteen, Reed for eight.
