Free agent and 13-year veteran LG Alan Faneca will announce his retirement from the NFL on Tuesday.
A nine-time Pro Bowler and six-time first-team All-Pro, Faneca was one of the best guards of his era and a future Hall of Famer. An elite run-blocker, he paved the way for Jerome Bettis and Willie Parker in Pittsburgh from 1998-2007. His level of play had dropped off precipitously the past two seasons, and the lockout presumably tilted the decision toward retirement over the past month or so. The 34-year-old's exit will leave journeymen Rex Hadnot and Jeremy Bridges as the primary candidates to take over at left guard.
 
This guys play fell off a fucking cliff. Great one year, then the next all you could hear was a trailing off of "AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" down the canyon.

The Jets released him because he nearly got Sanchez killed on a few occasions. I believe he had one of the worst, if not worst sacks allowed % in the NFL.

Don't get me wrong, he was a hell of a rush blocker and leader but his pass blocking went to shit fast.

He's a Hall of Famer.
 
Being in the hall of fame indicates that you were once absolutely dominant. You're saying this guy is a shoe in?

All Pro does mean something. Its not something a player can turn down and it goes to the next person. Its also not as much of a popularity contest, as fans don't have a vote in it.

As for Faneca, his pass blocking went down quickly, but until the end, the guy was as dominant run blocking as they come. Even more impressive is that he started every game the last nine years of his career, good for 144 consecutive games. For any player, much less an offensive lineman, that is impressive. I would definitely put him into the Hall of Fame.
