Fins release Porter

Dolphins released OLB Joey Porter.
The Fins are off the hook for the $4.8M Porter was slated to make in 2010. OLB has also vaulted near the top of their needs list. While Porter had nine sacks in 2009, beat writer Omar Kelly points out that he ranked 89th in the NFL in combined QB hurries and knockdowns. Porter can still be an effective nickel rusher, but his market value will be limited by age (33 in March), scheme fit (only the 3-4), and negligible impact as a run defender. His best fit is in Arizona, where Porter has history with the staff and pass-rush help is needed.

In most 3-4's, the OLB will play a 5-tech or outside shoulder of a tackle, which is where a weakside end will end up playing in a 4-3 in a lot of situations. A 3-4 OLB is usually backed off the line of scrimmage a yard or two, but with the right kind of player the transition can be made easily.

Porter is 6-3, 255 pounds, and he could transition nicely into a weak-side end in a base 4-3. With his age (and how he's struggled against the run in the past), he's probably not an every down player anymore, he'd probably play purely in passing situations. He has played defensive line in the past (college), so its not like he's never played the position. Besides, with all of the various fronts shown by NFL teams, he's likely played with his hand in the dirt before.

Best he could be in a 4-3 is a situational WILL in nickel packages. Playing 4-3 end every down, having to line up mask to mask with huge, long-armed OT's would be totally disastrous.
