Forget Haynesworth, Redskins sign another NT

ASHBURN, Va. (AP)—Free-agent nose tackle Maake Kemoeatu(notes) signed a two-year, $6.975 million contract with the Washington Redskins on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-5, 345-pound Kemoeatu spent last season on injured reserve with the Carolina Panthers after tearing his Achilles’ tendon in training camp.

His agent, Ken Vierra, said in a telephone interview that the tendon is “structurally sound” and Kemoeatu is able to walk and jog but not run yet.

“He’s got to really work it from a physical therapy standpoint. He’s on schedule. He should be ready for training camp, but you never know,” Vierra said.

Kemoeatu has 291 tackles and four sacks in 107 NFL games, including 61 starts, with Carolina (2006-09) and Baltimore (2002-05). The Redskins are expected to shift from a 4-3 alignment to a 3-4 under new defensive coordinator Jim Haslett, and Kemoeatu’s presence could allow tackle Albert Haynesworth(notes) to move outside.

The 31-year-old Kemoeatu’s signing represents the latest low-key move in a relatively quiet free agency period so far for Washington under new coach Mike Shanahan and new general manager Bruce Allen. The Redskins signed offensive lineman Artis Hicks(notes) on Saturday.

“It’s a new regime there,” Vierra said. “I think that was appealing.”

He said the deal includes various bonus provisions, and while it represents a step down from the free-agent deal Kemoeatu had with the Panthers, they recognize he is coming off a serious injury.

“This is clearly a move by the Redskins to say, ‘We like you. We believe you can be a guy for us. So we’re willing to make an investment and take a risk,”’ Vierra said. “And that says a lot.”

Carter isn't big and strong enough to be a 3-4 DE. Won't be surprised if he's cut after this season by the Redskins.

He might only have to play 2 plays in a series. He's definitely better than Phillip Daniels and I'm sure Andre Carter will be moved to outside linebacker.

Griffin is a 3 technique tackle and also had a hefty salary.

if they play a 34 defense, you don't need a speed rusher off the edge. I would assume it would be a good move.

lol, he's really not that slow for what he is especially for a 3-4 end. He had a pretty good season last year btw. Note how in '08 the Redskins hardly ever got any sacks and now all of a sudden Andre Carter and Brian Orakpo get into the double digits.

I think Haynesworth would be serviceable at end in the 3-4 but he would be a lot better at nose imo so it doesn't make much sense.

LOL at you attributing Brian Orakpo's success to a guy who played hard every 10th down. Orakpo is the best player on the team, not Haynesworth, and he had some MVP-talk directed his way last year.

I'm surprised the Redskins haven't cut Haynesworth for cap space and move Orakpo to NT. He takes up three blockers all by himself already.

Anywho, the other dude is far too large to move to end, so I guess this would be the natural idea... If you have two beast tackles, the ideal idea would be, to me to just stick with the 4-3... But to each their own.

You said move Andre Carter to LB. San Fran did the exact same thing when they were in a 3-4 and he completely sucked. I think he had maybe 2 sacks and 30 tackles, off the top of my head. He's best at the DE spot.

I would love this but I'm afraid they won't because of his $100 mill contract. I've hated the signing since the beginning, I was always a fan of Griffin TBH

Haynesworth is best on the bench clinging for his life with an oxygen tank

All his career he has been containing the outside run and being an edge rusher and then in his brief stint as a 3-4 OLB he dropped in coverage.

As a 3-4 DE He would need to gain 50-60-70 pounds and change his entire mindset. He would pretty much have to completely start over as a football player.

At least as a 3-4 OLB he has some experience. I can tell you right now if he doesn't play 3-4 OLB then he'll be either traded or released. There is absolutely no chance that he'll be a 3-4 end.
