I think we've gotten away from being fans a bit in the SABR dork era, breaking down every dollar of every deal. It's easy to get wrapped up in that, and we're all guilty of it.

I've been one of the worst with this, I know. Maybe some of that was jealousy or resentment, knowing my team refused to play ball in that market. Glad they finally grew a pair and got something done. Screw fiscal responsibility, you want to see your boys take the field when you tune in on Opening Day.

Anyway, the numbers are being rumored to be 7-8 years, 100-125 million. Solid value, didn't expect them to go that long. Hopefully the 8th year is an option.

I look at it this way. Realistically, how many championships are you really going to see in your lifetime? If you don't find other things to enjoy about the game, you end up as miserable all or nothing guy who everybody else wonders why they even watch.

I always go back to Larkin. Yes, the "right" thing to do at the end was trade him. But I was against it. To me, seeing the guy who bridged the gap from my childhood hero's like Rose & Davis to my adulthood as a Extra Innings subscribing super fan finish his career as a Red was more important than trading for some lottery ticket MiLB geeks, especially since realistically the Reds were going nowhere with that late 90's/early aughts pitching anyway.

We're too smart for our own good these days sometimes.

I like this signing. It shows that the Braves care about keeping their young core together and letting them improve, even at a high cost. Teams that trade off their talent before they have to pay them big time money such as the Rays really get on my nerves, because it shows that they don't care about winning.

I guess my overall point is that you have to find other ways to enjoy the game, because winning it all is so rare. I try to enjoy the fuck out of every Reds team that makes the postseason, because that 15 year drought is always around the corner. I'd have given up a testicle to win 90 and get knocked out round one in 2003. And it's pretty damn cool when a player you dig spends all of his prime years playing for your squad.

Calculating AVV and normalizing it to projected WAR isn't fun, man. It's fucking depressing because you realize you over paid this guy, or won't be able to sign that guy, or your window is only open for "X" amount of years.... So as fans I think we need to enjoy the other side sometimes.

Braves aren't keeping all of those young dudes, so they should be thrilled they pocketed this one.

While I agree, I think it was a mistake to trade James Shields and it would be a bigger mistake trading David Price as the rumors say will happen. What happens is they let guys grow into good leaders, then ship those good leaders to other teams, so when the young guys come up all they have to go from is coaching, they can't turn to a veteran player and ask them for more advice since the vets are all gone.

Have you not watched the Rays consistently plug new pitchers into their rotation year in and year out and have success? Did you not see that they solidified their lineup for years by trading Shields and acquiring the AL ROY Wil Myers, as well as pitching prospects capable of continuing the revolving door of success?

The strong farm system happened mainly because the Rays used to be a 100-loss team consistently and kept getting the No. 1 pick. They don't have that luxury anymore. I don't see the Rays being dominant after they start trading guys like Longoria or Myers so they don't have to pay them either.

What are you even talking about? Didn't they already pay Longoria? The guy is under contract until 2023 and recently got 6 yrs/100 million.
