Is this one of the most overrated movies of all time? The opening is awesome with the fight between the natives and the immigrants. The action sequence is actually very well done, with the fighting very realistic and brutal. The first third of the movie is very engaging and then the last 30-45 mins of the movie shows up and brings everything to a dull thump. The second fight between the immigrants and natives wasn't even a fight. Turned into Bill Cutting running around in the fog, and fooling Amsterdam, and then Amsterdam gets lucky that Bill gets a piece of shrapnel and is pretty much rendered useless. Then there is some montage of the aftermath of the Draft Riots and a time lapse of the grave site.

I find that Scorsese made this movie in an insane rush as if he ran out of money or the studio pushed the movie out the door, because the editing in the last 45 minutes is terrible as the movie jumps all over the place.

This is the second time I have watched this movie, except for DDL's performance is Butcher Bill, this movie was just 'OK' I don't think Leo even brought everything in this movie.

I get what you are saying. The "end" of the movie seemed both overly long and yet rushed at the same time. It was like 45 minutes of "falling action", because they had to cover too much material. I liked the movie because its an interesting time period and an interesting story.

This is a classic case of the ending determining the rating for the entire movie. If you watch up until the last 10 minutes, you will be fully engrossed and demanding to see the ending. It has great acting, great plot, great setup, everything is just amazing leading into the climax.

However, I really think the last 10 minutes drags it down. I was expecting some big gang fight at the end, reminicent of the Outsiders or even a less spinny West Side Story. Instead we get an explosion, a joke of a death, and overall, you feel let down.

I'd say it is still a 3 out of 4 stars, great job, but it could have been 4/4 with a better ending.

I agree with the OP. It's a terribly overrated movie, I was completely bored 45 minutes into it and didn't give a shit what happened to any of the characters.

The Butcher is a terrible heel, because he's the most charismatic character by far, and you end up rooting for him because there isn't a babyface in the movie nearly as interesting. And although ruthless, you can kind of understand where the heel coming from. I related myself to him more than the bland babyfaces. I wanted MOAR BUTCHER in every scene.

Bad job by Scorsese, one of his worst efforts. Right up there with the dreadfully boring 'The Aviator'. But nothing will ever be worse than 'Bringing Out The Dead'.
