Geno Smith Fires Agent over not being 1st round pick

Four days after Geno Smith slid out of the first round of the draft, the former West Virginia quarterback fired his agents due to his displeasure over his draft position, according to sources.

The Daily News has learned that Smith thought that he would and should be the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Sources told the News that Smith’s agents from Select Sports Group gave him no assurance of his draft position.

The Jets drafted Smith, who was atop Gang Green’s quarterback rankings, with the eighth pick in the second round (39th overall), which didn’t sit well with him. Smith can’t hire another agent for five days.

Despite Smith’s draft position, new general manager John Idzik made it clear that he still believes the rookie will be under the microscope.

“If you’re a first-round quarterback—first-round any position – the spotlight is a little bit brighter,” Idzik said on ESPN radio’s Mike & Mike show on Tuesday morning. “Him coming in as a second rounder, perhaps it’s a little dim, but being that he’s in the New York market, he’s at a high profile position, I think he’s going to be center stage regardless.”

Well, Geno Smith's ultimate undoing was not going to the Senior Bowl, IMO. He would have been a high first round pick if he went to the Senior Bowl and showed out. Now, if that was his agent's call...then, I think the agent deserves to get fired.

I don't understand why these agents do a disservice to these players by telling them to hold off on doing things during the draft process. It only hurts you by NOT doing it. Whether its combine stuff. Senior Bowl. It only hurts you. It rarely, if EVER hurts you.

What hurts you...not doing it...having previous coaching staffs (like, your college coaching staff) take you to task for your shitty attitude (Moore, Montgomery and other LSU players, etc).

Clearly has some entitlement issues that he needs to get over. Had he not been talked out of leaving New York after not being picked in the first round, that would have been one of the biggest bitch moves ever. But firing your agent because teams don't think you're that good of a player is right up there.

I meant in general. People were flipping out about Geno, but no one cared about Lacy. The whole thing was just dumb, let him do w/e the fuck he wants.



He would have been criticized no matter what, so I don't really care either way. And his agent cost him a few million, so he definitely has a right to fire him.

-Ben Watson fired his agent while engaged in a holdout with the NE Patriots months after the NFL Draft
-Sean Taylor fired his agents four months after the draft

I don't see this as an issue... The guy fell big time in the draft. It's what he does now that is the key.

He should hook up with someone like Tom Condon who is used to getting results for his QB clients and has a good rep around the league already. If he hires Wiz Khalifa as his next agent I think we all know how things are going to turn out.

I wouldn't be surprised if he goes with Jay-z's agency as it seems Jay is focusing on NY athletes right now. The only reason him leaving NY or firing his agent is a big deal to some is because he is a QB. I don't get the correlation between him not wanting to sit in the green room another day or him firing his agents and it somehow equating to him not handling adversity well. It is unfortunate though because if he doesn't succeed people will point to these decisions as to why he failed, which is comical.

He's blaming other people for him not getting drafted as high as he wanted to be. If you want to get drafted higher, be a better player. Your agent can't do that for you.

I'm gonna :homer: for a second and say that the agents weren't there the second day, and Genos side of the story is that the agent leaving is why he was fired.

The Jets gave me hope that it wouldn't be as big of a fucking circus there this year. I guess not.
