phillips92409.jpgChris Faytok/The Star LedgerIs Giants safety Kenny Phillips' season over? Will the Giants bring in another safety? We'll find out soon. This one is going to take a bit of detective work on all of our parts. There’s something going on with the Giants and safety Kenny Phillips, who is perhaps headed to injured reserve because of a knee injury that might require surgery.
But there’s more to this whole situation. Even Tom Coughlin admitted as much on Thursday afternoon after his team completed a Phillips-less practice.
“There are a lot of circumstances involved,” Coughlin said, “and I’m not at liberty to say anything at this point.”
Coughlin was then asked if those are “medical” circumstances.
“Yeah. Well, all circumstances. There are other things involved,” Coughlin replied. “There are other circumstances surrounding not just Kenny (but) what’s going on around that. And I’m not at liberty to talk about that until those other issues get settled. That’s the best I can do for you today. I’m not trying to duck your questions; I’m just telling you there are other issues.”
Asked if those issues involve other players coming in, Coughlin replied, “Maybe.”
Now, here’s the thing: clearly, Coughlin doesn’t want to admit what’s going on with Phillips because it’ll compromise the team’s position here. I don’t think it’s the typical injury situation with not wanting an opponent to know. At this point, I would think the Bucs know Phillips isn’t playing on Sunday. And if it was the average street free agent, what’s the problem with letting him know you need a safety? It’s not like he’s going to jack up his price. He wants a job and he has no leverage.
So that’s what leads be to believe there might be a trade brewing. That, and the fact the team has said they’ll likely be able to tie up some loose ends at 4 p.m., which is when moves become official.
Let’s try not to make any assumptions here – not even with Phillips. Maybe they’re going to take the wait-and-see approach with Phillips while bringing in another safety? Who knows? It’s all conjecture until 4 p.m.
But if Phillips is gone, defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan will miss him.
“It’s just like losing any other starter; it’s a hit,” Sheridan said. “It’d be no different than any other guy in our starting lineup being out for any amount of time. It’s always a loss.”
Boy, wouldn’t it be something if they traded with the Rams for James Butler? Ha. That would be awesome.
