I wish this excited me more, or at all. I think they should have stopped at 3, which was good but kind of felt tired to me by the end. I don't see how going backwards in the timeline will help considering 3 was all about even more "holy shit" moments. But here's hoping maybe they find something different to do and run with it.

I can never get enough GoW. Every one of the games has been amazing.

I guess this is the "top secret" game being worked on by Sony Santa Monica that the winner of The Tester season 3 would be getting a job with. No huge surprise there seeing as how that's the only big series I think that studio has ever worked on.

Exactly what I'm thinking. How can you get bored of God Of War when it's a slasher type game, If you like that genre then you should like it regardless and nobody does it better than GoW.

I am excited. They've done prequels before, and there is no reason to believe that they can't pull off another one, especially with the full power of the PS3 at their disposal.

Still, I wish that they would move forward. They left open Kratos' fate obviously, but there are some things still open that they could explore within mythology and the storyline they've created.

Very doubtful. You don't kill off a character from a system exclusive that is as big as God of War.

God of War: Ascension has online and offline multiplayer battles for up to eight players. There are a variety of multiplayer modes, customisable avatar warriors, armour and weapon types to unlock. Eurogamer's Johnny Minkley saw it in action for a God of War: Ascension preview, published today.

Multiplayer "combines the brutal gameplay and large-scale battles that God of War is known for to create a competitive experience like never before", Sony said. According to game director Todd Pappy it's a "fresh twist" on competitive gaming.

But the game has single-player, too, this time with a "revamped" combat and weapon system, "promptless" mini-games and new puzzles. Sony mentioned "fluid, life-like characters, dynamic lighting effects, and world-changing scenarios".

Pappy told Eurogamer Ascension's campaign is "just a little bit shorter" than in previous God of War games. "We've mapped out everything and given time estimates. It'll be pretty damn close."

And lead combat designer Jason McDonald insisted that single-player has not suffered as a result of the addition of multiplayer. "We didn't want to sacrifice single-player for multiplayer, neither did we want to tack [the latter] on," he said. "We're definitely going full force with both."

As for the story, Ascension sees players assume the role of Kratos as he tries to break the blood oath that binds him to Ares. Since this is a prequel, we get to see a younger Kratos, one driven mad after bring tricked into killing his wife and child. In the game Kratos "seeks to break his bond and gain the clarity to seek revenge on Ares for his part in the death of his family". Helping is his signature double-chained blades.

I'm curious to see how multiplayer works. GoW is one of the last games I would ever think of for multiplayer, but I also thought the same thing about Uncharted 2 and I fucking love that multiplayer. I'm more concerned with the fact that they are already admitting that the single player will be "slightly shorter". The campaigns in the GoW games have never been crazy long to begin with. Maybe 12 hours on the long side? Now you're going to shorten that even more, for what has always been to this point a single player experience?

From the screens it almost looks like it's similar to that last downloadable Castlevania game, where you have four (or was it six?) players working towards the same goal but also trying to get more points, items, money than the other players. If that's the case than it will probably be pretty interesting. Another example would be R&C:All 4 One. Even though that game is more co-op story focused, there is still that element of competing against the other three players for items, upgrades, etc.

I have faith in Sony's first party developers so I'll hold off my judgment at this point.

As I've already said, I don't think I will ever get tired of a GoW game. The gameplay and graphics looked stunning. GoW 3 is one of the best looking games I've ever seen but somehow this game looks better.
