Granderson to Mets- 4 years, $60 million

The Mets and outfielder Curtis Granderson have agreed to a four-year contract worth $60 million, Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com has confirmed. Joel Sherman of the New York Post first reported the news.

Granderson, 32, missed over 100 games in 2013 due to a pair of hit-by-pitch related injuries. His right forearm was broken by a pitch in spring training, then, soon after he returned, his left hand was broken by another pitch. Granderson hit .229/.317/.407 (97 OPS+) with seven home runs in 61 games around the injuries.

Over the last four years, Granderson managed a .245/.335/.495 (120 OPS+) batting line with the Yankees. He put together back-to-back 40+ home runs seasons in 2011 and 2012, and he wasn't just a product of small Yankee Stadium either -- he hit 37 home runs on the road and 47 at home during those two seasons.

The Yankees tendered Granderson a qualifying offer, so they will receive a supplemental first round draft pick as compensation. The Mets have a protected first round pick and will instead forfeit their second rounder.

Disagree, I think this is the steal of the offseason, considering what Ellsbury got.

Only four years, and even if his other skills decline power doesn't age, and he's been an elite power guy when healthy. Last year can be tossed out with the two freak injuries.

At that price, i'm kind of annoyed the Reds weren't in on this, since there was talk that they were going to move on Choo a couple of months ago with a 4/$90 offer (which is obviously not happening now after Ellsbury).

I hope it is the steal of the offseason...but I'm just happy the Mets actually went out and spent some money. Yes they had to go 4 years and shell out 15 on average but shit, you NEED to show something of a pulse.

Met fans want it both ways...they wanted Grandy at some imaginary 3/30...not in this market. You want someone, you have to overpay...PERIOD.

Grandy and Young are two solid additions to the outfield...both are good defensively to flank Lagares. I feel Grandy's year last year was just flukey with the injuries...and he's actually shown he can hit lefties, so we won't have to sit him on that side of a platoon. Wright needs help, this helps a lot.

I don't even think they overpaid. Dude was hitting 40 bombs per year prior to last year's broken hands.

And yeah, about time Mets spent some money. It was turning into a clown show with the Marlon Byrd's & Chris Young's. Can't keep pulling that bargain basement shit in New York, have to try to put a real team out there, gotta have some juice. They got an impact player here and didn't break the bank.

I should lower my expectations I guess, but this deal is still lulzy, just not on the level as some of the other ones. FA is getting back to this, so I guess I need to change my expectations.

I do admit the Mets needed to do something to blow some positive PR as well, I just think it could have been someone else for $15 million a season. Though with things how they've been so far, this could definitely prove to be a bargain all things considered.

I'm not a huge Grandy fan, mainly because I think he can be much better. He was a much better all-around hitter in '07 & '08. Watching him swing the bat now, it seems he's just trying to hit bombs and if he doesn't get one, he strikes out. It's like, somewhere along the line, he got the idea he was Reggie Jackson. It's no coincidence that as his homers have been on an upward trend (of course, not this past season), his BA/OBP/BABiP all continue to fall further into the shitter. Hell, despite all the HRs, his OPS+ the last four full seasons hasn't really been that much above average, except for the 142 he put up in '11.

That said, the Mets do need to show some signs of life and the way the market is playing out, a 4 year deal at $15 mil per for a potential 40 homer guy with a fairly big name isn't too shabby as long as he's healthy.

I love Grandy but he just K's too much. He would always disappear in the playoffs. Although 4 years isnt a bad signing for him i hope he does well with my former team.

4 years for Granderson is too much, but Mets had to overspend (even so, $15M/per isn't horrible). They need someone besides Wright who's a threat to do some damage. Stick him in left and find someone willing to deal anything for Ike Davis, move Duda to 1st.

Now only if they had some power out in RF....

In Beltran's favor, he will likely get a chance to rotate at DH as well as play the field. It's clear that he primarily got this contract because of his past performance, but also for his post-season performance. I hate the past performance thing, especially when we are talking about players over 30. Granderson will be 36 when this deal is finished, Beltran 39.

I'm firmly off the overpayment bandwagon now. I guess I will have to find other ways to criticize some of these deals.
