After the two sides couldn’t agree on a restructured contract, WR Marvin Harrison asked the Colts to release him, a league source said Sunday night.

As much as the team would rather not — and Colts president Bill Polian acknowledged Sunday that it’s a tricky situation — Harrison is a luxury that Indianapolis can no longer afford.

Now that Harrison has declined to restructure his contract, the Colts have little choice but to let him and his $13.4 million salary-cap number go. It will mark the end of an illustrious 13-year career in Indianapolis, where Harrison and QB Peyton Manning formed one of the greatest quarterback-receiver tandems in NFL history.

Already the speculation about where Harrison will land is beginning. For starters, Harrison is determined to continue playing. A logical landing spot would be the receiver-needy Philadelphia Eagles, where Harrison would be reunited with his former Syracuse teammate, QB Donovan McNabb, while getting to play in the city where he lives.

So wait he asked for it? Could be why he hasn't been released yet. Free agency starts Friday, February 27th at midnight. Its right around the corner fellas can't wait.

Indeed...it's not like he's going to get big-time money on the FA market, not after racking up less than 900 yards and six touchdowns in his last two seasons combined. Not to mention the fact that he'll be turning 37 in August.

Philly seems like an ideal spot for Harrison, maybe a two-year contract. A decent chance of being successful, and still being a relevant wide receiver in Philly's god awful receiver group, while the Eagles grab a veteran who hopefully has some left in the tank for a good price.

It's kinda sad, though. You don't see many players stick with the same team their whole career in this day and age...Harrison had a good chance at making that happen.

You know, I've heard so much about this lately, and it really hurts. I grew up watching Harrison on Sundays, and he's great for the city of Indianapolis, football or not.

I really thought he'd be the type to stick out his career with Indy.

That being said, he still hasn't been released, so I'm going to hold out hope and believe in Polian and Co. C'mon Mahhhhvin, stay in Indy!
 
Marvin Harrison was one of the best wrs to play the game in the last 10years and offered us so much . Im actually upset that he asked for a release but i guess thats the market where dealing with these days
 
I will say this. Teams have to be smarter when signing guys to long term deals. I am pretty sure Marvin knew what he was doing when he signed this contract that was going to pay him around 13 mil when he was 37. This is a mistake many teams make when signing long term deals and happens in every sport. .
 
Harrison is clearly on the decline, and the Colts should move on. It happens...he didn't want to give an inch in re-negotiations, so it's time to move on. Happened to Jerry Rice, it can happen to Harrison.
 
This is no ones fault but the colts front office who offered him a contract that would pay about 13 mill when he would be 37. The only position you would pay that much at that age is a QB because they can play rather efficient at the age.
 
Last I heard was that he refused to restructure his deal. Now he wants out? Between that shooting and this, innocent little Marvin is turning out to be a dick. This could hurt the Colts losing him, unless they can cut him loose and maybe pick up Housh to at least grab someone else. I mean they do have Wayne and Gonzalez still.

I've always thought the NFL should have a cap exemption for true franchise players - guys with 10 or more years on one team.

If a team is willing to overpay to keep a guy like Harrison, Ray Lewis (you know, face of the franchise), the league should give them an exemption.

I wouldn't have minded seeing the Titans scoop him up if but for one thing...I can't stand the way Harrison always lays down after the catch. Be a man and take a lick and maybe try for a few extra yards. You never know, you could break one.

I always hated that about Marvin. As great as he has been, I hate watching the "catch and curl up in the fetal position" every other reception.
