Crazy how just adding the word "The" before Heat changes the answer completely. What an awful POS that was.

I wouldn't classify RD as a bank robbery movie. It's more of a betrayal/undercover movie in the same category as Donnie Brasco.

The bank robbery scene itself is not an important part of the movie. But I get what you mean, and Heat is still a better bank robbery movie. Maybe not a better movie, though, but I love both so it's hard for me to pick since they're both great.
 
Yeah RD isn't really a heist movie. It's a story about a group of guys before and after a heist, but not a pure heist movie. The actual bank robbing scene in Heat is iconic.
 
The thing about Reservoir Dogs though, it's a pure "caper" film through and through. With the exception of the tipping scene in the beginning, every thing that happens in this movie is directly related to the heist.

There's no old existentialist cop on the verge of retiring, new hot shot on the force, guy doing his last heist, guy torn between a life of crime and his girlfriend or any other of that other personal stuff that you get in films like Heat or The Town. You may not see the heist in Reservoir Dogs but it's the only thing that matters in the movie. Nothing else is going on. Hard to label it as anything else.

That's fair. The non-linear structure helps it avoid all those tropes, but it also kind of takes the natural suspense out of it. We already know the heist went bust.
