So long Hung, Bored to Death, and How To Make It in America!

HBO has canceled the sleeper comedies to make way for more fresh programming coming down the pipeline. Hung and Bored each ran for three seasons, and America ran for two.

In the meantime, the pay cabler ordered a second season of Enlightened, the Laura Dern starrer that just earned Golden Globe nods for best TV series (comedy/musical) and for best actress.

In 2012, HBO will roll out Luck, a new drama from Michael Mann and David Milch that stars Dustin Hoffman; as well as Aaron Sorkin’s series about life behind the scenes of a cable-news show. The network will also premiere Veep, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Girls, Life’s Too Short, and Angry Boys.

New seasons of Game of Thrones, True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, and Treme also are coming. No word yet, though, on a new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm (but our fingers are crossed).

Can't say I watched much of any. I was into Hung for a bit, and Bored to Death had a couple episodes I enjoyed, but I feel like the best HBO shows are more drama than comedy.

Bored to Death is fantastic if you can get past Schwartzman. Galifinakis and Ted Danson are fucking spectacular and should have their own show.

How to Make it in America never really did anything spectacular and it makes the most sense as to getting cancelled.

I stopped watching Hung halfway through the first season and never got back into it. I'm contemplating finishing the series up.

I've never even heard of Enlightened before this article.

I've got the first two episodes of Luck on my DVR, haven't watched it yet, but I'm sure it's pretty awesome.

I usually trust HBO, but this kind of leaves me scratching my head. Color me disappointed.

Larry David does whatever he wants. When he's ready to film another season, he'll do it. He is immortal and will end the show when he wants to.

How to Make it in America was so forgettable I didn't even bring it up in my initial reply. I'm pretty sure NAHSTE is the only one I know who likes it.

Surely, you jest. I'm completely neutral on the show. It was decidedly mediocre. I just watched every week for the opening credits and some cool scenic shots of NYC. I won't miss it.

That said, I am shocked it was canceled since it had the Wahlberg production company involved and a lot of folks compared it favorably to early years of Entourage.

Hung, on the other hand, was fucking terrible.

The first two seasons of Bored to Death were pretty good. I always liked Schwartzman though (Rushmore, Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Scott Pilgrim) so that's probably why I could stick with it. Didn't have HBO when I moved so I missed all of Season 3. Heard only 200,000 viewers tuned in for the finale so that's probably why they canned it.

Definitely gonna pick up the series on blu ray though whenever they drop all 3 seasons together. Stoner Ted Danson is ftw.

That is partly the reason they wanted to pare down their show catalog next year. GoT is gonna cost an assload. I personally wouldn't mind if those were the only two shows they were running next year if it'd make them that much better. (Curb can come too if it wants, obviously.)

Enlighted - I doubt I'll ever watch.

The Wire, Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire, Entourage, ROME, and a few others I can't think of right now ... amazing.

HTMIIA getting cancelled isn't surprising. Show ended on a mediocre note after starting far below it.

Bored to Death was one of my favorite shows. It was getting a little too weird this season, though.

Hung had a fantastic third season. This one surprises me the most, but I guess no one was watching.
