In any event, there are lots of rumors as to who will replace him. It's all conjecture now but I wonder whether the new hire will have an itching to bring MMA to the network.

I doubt the UFC will be interested since it would mean sacrificing PPV business, but you never know. Perhaps someone else makes waves in MMA down the road and gets on HBO.

I was thinking of using HBO in the SNME type role, having a handful of shows a year. That would sacrifice PPVs.

I guess the UFC on HBO as their exclusive home would be an option.

I see it like boxing, where HBO gets the Paul Williams level guys who won't draw on PPV anyway (think: Diego Sanchez) with the rare and occasional Klitchko level guy once per year.

This could be the biggest story of the year in MMA depending on who takes over.

Early on HBO would have been great for the UFC, but right now where the UFC is, I don't see how being on HBO would help them. If you're going to air free fights you may as well put them on cable TV, or local network if the deal comes up, and reach a larger audience. For PPVs you can take the same approach that HBO does with boxing, but then the UFC is sharing a piece of that pie with HBO. The truth is, they don't need their promotional help and would make more money without them, whichever way you look at it.

I was thinking of it as UFC being on a basic cable network and having occasional HBO shows. They would need bigger than average main events for HBO and that could sacrifice a good PPV buyrate.
