what a bunch of fucking pansies, he played everyone on the roster, sat the starters in the third quarter and wanted his seniors to get touches, so I see nothing wrong with this:

Russell Stone is the head football coach at Byrd High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina.

He has been suspended until Saturday as punishment for doing his job too well in preparing his team. While no official word has come out on why Stone was suspended for Fridays’ game, it is largely believed that it is punishment for his team “running up” the score against Southern Lee. The Byrd Eagles won the game 75-7.

There are obviously two sides to this argument.

Argument against the run up….

The first case is that Stone could have slowed down his offense after leading the game 55-0 at halftime. Instead, many of his starters including his quarterback played in the third quarter even thought the game was well in hand. Why would you risk injury to a starter in a blowout just to run up the numbers? Also, the Eagles continued passing the ball even though the score was very lopsided.

To continue to embarrass the other team showed a complete lack of sportsmanship and honor. After all, this is not college ball where teams are fighting for recruits or points in the poll. In high school a win is a win, period.

Argument in favor the run up….

Stone actually used every player on his roster during the game. That rarely happens in high school football. Stone said he had senior wide receivers on his team that had not caught a pass all year and wanted them to get a touch, and that was why they passed some in the second half. It is also unsafe to have players go at half speed, because the chances of being injured go up greatly. Yes, you can call more conservative plays, but the backups that get in the game are still going to do all they can to get their moment in the spotlight. Another reason teams play hard late in the season even in a blowout is to try and prepare for the playoffs.

Russell Stone just got caught in the middle of a question that has been argued since high school football began.

yeah thats kinda BS, im sure there was no bad intent in "running up the score." thats a horrible term anyway, IMO if the defense cant stop you, why is that your fault. i get the wole sportsmanship thing, but its football not having tea with the queen. and its not like he was airing it out the whole time anyway, he just wanted to get his seniors some touches.

I guarantee you this suspension came as a result of someone with authority in the school district or with the opposing team complaining to the right person about what happened. Sad part is the person that probably brought the complaint probably doesn't know much about football either.

I would have to see a play by play to make a judgement. If he was calling bombs on first down while up 60 points in the second half, fuck him he's an asshole. If he was running FB dives on first and second down, then throwing on third to move the chains, then I have no issue.

Looks like he made the effort to play the scrubs, so my guess is he wasn't intentionally embarrassing the opponent. I don't believe in this "fuck them, its their job to stop it" garbage, that's immature and classless, but based on the info we have, this doesn't look like a run up.

I don't know about NC but in CT if you put a beat down on a team and win by, I think, 60+ then the coach is served a 1-game suspension.

high school should be about getting you ready for the next level. in football, you dont turn off the jets, ever. neither do you in any form of competition in the real world. you dont ever say to yourself "im not going to do my job as well because its not nice to make the other people competing for a promotion look so bad."

Like I said earlier, I would have to see the plays he was calling to make a judgement. You don't ask your kids to not play hard, but you can dictate tempo with conservative playcalling. If you score 40 more points on FB dives, so be it.

I don't like the "real world" comparison, because football is a game and should be treated as such. Sportsmanship and class is just as important as anything else.

I saw a high school score that made me really SMH yesterday:

South Atlanta 95
Cross Keys 13

Now, South Atlanta isn't a good program at all, underbudgeted, barely 30 kids on the team, and the kids are either malnourished and lanky or fat and lazy, and I think this year their record was 3-7. My alma mater, which is pretty average historically beat them earlier by two TDs ... I'm thinking, how the fuck did they score 95 points? But then I remembered that the team they played, Cross Keys, usually has fewer than 20 kids on it, and is always in the papers as a human interest piece because they're all from different ethnic backgrounds. Basically, a shitty football team beat a handful of Mexicans, Asians and Pakis 95-13. That shouldn't happen.

Usually Cross Keys' opponents top out around 50, and I think that should be about the standard. I mean at what point does it stop becoming fun for you? I remember once my team won a game 61-0 and I just felt kind of weird about it. Maybe I'm a bleeding heart, I dunno. I just think that a team should stop trying to score at some point at the high school level, even if means running twenty straight fullback dives. Not every team is playing with the same budget, talent pool, etc. Unless it's a playoff game, call off the fucking dogs.

I played against Southern Lee in HS and we won 56-7.

They are fucking terrible. We basically had to run HB draw the entire 2nd half because we were up 49-0 at half.

I think it takes integrity out of the sport. What good is running a HB Dive the ENTIRE 2nd half against a team? They lose 50-0 instead of 70-0.

It the same reason you don't steal bases or hit and run when you're up 9 runs, and you don't take 3 point shots up 40 in the 4th Q. That's why the playcalling matters. I don't have a problem with the score, its how you arrive at the score.
