I finally saw the new Star Trek movie ... thumbs up

Missed it during the theatrical run, so I decided to just wait out the Blu-Ray.
Bought the Blu-Ray based entirely on reviews.
Two thumbs up.
J.J. Abrams did the franchise proud, the casting was solid (though I thought Chekov's accent was awful) and Zoe Saldana looked spectacular as Uhara.
Chris Pine was a pretty solid Kirk, Zachary Quinto could easily be Leonard Nimoy's son (or grandson).
Eric Bana was an effective villain.
Nice package of extras on the Blu-Ray.
 
I coincidentally watched today for the first time. It was a good sci fi movie by my standards, but I feel I would have appreciated it much more if I was familiar with all of the characters.

I don't necessarily think that's true.

Yes the original Star Trek was great, but this movie could stand on its own.

That said, you should try to find season 1 of the series. It was consistently good TV for the era.
 
have you watched the deleted scenes yet? I heard they give you a lot more background on Nero and what he did in his 25 year wait and also they changed the scene where he crash lands on the ice planet around. Originally they filmed it to where he met the old Spock in a bar instead of being chased by a CGI monster and finding him in a cave.

I just saw this two days ago and I loved it. I really have/had no interest in Star Trek before this movie. My brother was always into those terrible TV shows with Patrick Stewart and the other spin offs. So, I got a little dose of Star Trek in my life, which was not a good experience.

Safe to say, JJ Abrams made Star Trek cool.
 
It just looked like a lot of stuff blowing up to me. At least Winona Ryder died. I liked the Spock character, but everything else was extremely forced. The film tried to cover too much ground. It really has nothing in common with any of the old Star Trek shows, which would put forth philosophical questions an analogous futuristic terms. There were no philosophical dilemmas in the movie...Kill the bad guys...ok, job done.
