I see the hater train is full this year. In the past two seasons, no SS has a higher WAR than Ian Desmond. Poor defense and all.

Only on VSN is a 28 year old shortstop coming off back to back 20/20 seasons considered over-rated.

Please stay on topic. This is about the staggering amount of errors Ian Desmond commits.

As for the WAR line, being a cumulative stat I'd hope he had the lead after two full seasons, given the injuries or relative inexperience of his contemporaries. If you think he's better than Tulo, HanRam or Simmons feel free to start a separate thread or bump one of the many we already have on the subject of ranking shortstops comparatively.

For now, let's focus on Ian Desmond's high frequency for committing errors and his inability to adequately field his position.

20 seems like a lot. I know fielding percentage is not the best tool for evaluating, but seems like he's a poor defensive player. Would prefer a more complete package.

I'm sure you would prefer a shortstop who could OPS over .700 for an entire season.

Hanley Ramirez had three seasons in a row with 20 errors. Alexi Ramirez has two. The complete package is pretty rare. Pretty much Tulo is the only shortstop right now who hits well and fields well.

Again, who cares so long as he's hitting? He has above average range, prone to an error, OPSes over .800 and wins back to back Silver Slugger awards. Like I said, of greater concern is his bat. I imagine having a pregnant wife and trying to quit dip is not helping.

Since 2012, Ian Desmond has -12 DRS, 5th worst among all qualified SS, and his wRC+ is worse then Jed Lowrie's. He's really lighting the world on fire with that performance.

Simmons is currently hitting .299/.310/.507 with a 2% K rate and a .206 ISO. Think that qualifies as hitting well. Obviously there's a good bit regression to come on the slugging, but the skill set should continue to translate to offensive success considering he just turned 24.

28 year old Desmond: 161 G, 669 PA, .271/.324/.435, 21 HR, 4.1 fWAR
24 year old Simmons: 159 G, 668 PA, .258/.300/.420, 19 HR, 5.1 fWAR

Small sample size. You asked for the "complete package." Only Tulo has proven he's it.
