You don't think Kennedy can get back to being at least a league average starter in Petco? He still has 2 years left of arbitration too, he made $4 million this year. I think for a club with the resources and needs that the Padres have, a league average starter who can give you 200 innings next year is more valuable than holding onto a lefty specialist.
My stance is probably colored a bit by my general belief that teams shouldn't trade starting pitching for relief pitching, but I also still believe Kennedy can get back to non-bum level at some point.

VERY short term move for Towers, because Kennedy is having a terrible year and Thatcher helps now because the bullpen is really bad. Stites looks like a sure fire bet to make the majors at some point with some awesome K/BB & run prevention numbers, but again, he's a bullpen guy. Plus the pick.
With that said, a no brainer for SD, because Kennedy will settle in as a middle rotation guy and is better than Volquez who he will replace for the next two years.
I know the prevailing though is always LOL TOWERS, and I like this better for SD, but it's not as bad as people are saying for ARZ because I see where they're coming from. I would have found another way to get relief help if it were me, but whatever.

Maybe Kennedy can regain form in a new uni...IMO, he wouldn't have bounced back in Zona.
I get that they didn't give up much, but Kennedy was going to get Non-tendered anyways. They probably could've gotten him for free off of the waiver wire in August if not for a cheap Major League deal this winter. There was no rush to get him at the deadline is my point.

I guess if you want to start making adjustments with him now, then fine. One guy on fangraphs compared the trade to breaking a dollar for four quarters so I guess those smarter than me see it as an even swap.

I have said for a while that Kennedy is terrible now, but I also acknowledge that if I was a team with bad starting pitching I would take him if the price is right. 2011 is now the obviously outlier for Kennedy, so I don't expect much from him, but there is some upside.
The Padres got him for basically nothing, the best piece they gave up was the Comp pick. Kind of a dumb trade by Towers considering the arms he has in MiLB right now that could contribute in the majors now out of the bullpen.

Another pitcher with control problems that Bud Black gets to try and fix. Pretty clear that Gibson and Nagy didn't want Kennedy to continue to sink their already barely afloat playoff chances, and would rather keep Delgado in the rotation. I don't know how long they were shopping him but it makes you wonder if they held back on shopping him too long and missed out on the other relievers out there. That pen has just been brutal this year, Brad Ziegler is closing out games right now.

Padres actually make out better in this deal I think. Kennedy has a better chance to bounce back where he is now, and if he does, the Padres can then turn him for a much higher value than they gave up.
