What is IGN SX?
IGN SX, the IGN Stock Exchange, is a game that allows you to buy and sell imaginary video game shares using SX credits.
You start with 10,000 credits that you can use to buy shares in video games you think will be popular. From there it's pretty straightforward. The general idea is to buy low and sell high to make more credits than anyone else.
Please note that the credits have no monetary value at all. They are just credits for use in this game. Also, the price we assign to a video game share has no correlation to the real world value of the game.
Why is it in Alpha?
We've labelled it as an Alpha because we intend to try features out, tweak the algorithms, find bugs and get your feedback on how to make it better before we launch it.
Please keep in mind that we may want to reset the game a number of times during the Alpha. A reset will mean your balance will be reset to 10,000 credits and all of your shares removed. This is important so that we can test various pricing algorithms and fix any major bugs and exploits.
If the idea of having to start all over again or running in to bugs isn't your thing then you might be better waiting until we launch it. On the flip side, you'll have the opportunity to help us make a kick ass game!
Does it work just like a real stock market?
Nope, not even close. This is just a game we thought you might find fun. Depending on your feedback we may add more realistic features in the future.
How often do share prices fluctuate?
Prices fluctuate on an hourly basis at the moment but we intend to change this in the future. Also, at 6am every morning we recalculate all prices based on how popular a game was on IGN the previous day.
How do share prices fluctuate?
The exact details of how prices fluctuate are a closely guarded secret. It is based on a number of factors but one of the key ones is how popular a game is on IGN. We're hoping that the more you play the game the better you should be able to get at predicting fluctuations.
What do all those numbers in the Your Stats section mean?
Balance: The number of credits you currently have available to buy shares
Invested: How many credits you currently have invested in shares
P&L: Profit & Loss is how well your currently purchased shares are doing
Net Worth: How many credits you would have if you were to sell off all your shares at their current prices
Rank: This is your current rank. For every million you earn you can cash in for points to raise your rank
Position: This is your position within the leaderboard of players
Why do I have a rank and how do I go up in ranks?
Every time you earn a million credits or more you have the option to cash in to earn a point. As you earn more points you will go up in ranks. You can cash in on your portfolio page.
The leaderboard is first sorted by rank and then net worth. So to get higher on the leaderboard you should be aiming to earn a million and then cash in as soon as possible.
Please note that it doesn't matter how much over one million you earned when you cash in. You will always get just one point. Here is a list of the ranks and points required:
Greenhorn - 1 point
Rookie - 2 points
Entrepreneur - 3 points
Day Trader - 5 points
Speculator - 8 points
Market Analyst - 13 points
Hedge Fund Manager - 21 points
What does Unlisted mean?
Not all games are available in the stock exchange. Only games above a certain popularity level get listed. If a listed game drops below this level then it will get unlisted. If you have shares in a game that gets unlisted then they will automatically be sold off at a zero value and you will lose all your invested credits.
What happens if I lose all my credits?
At any time you can choose to file for bankruptcy from the portfolio page. If you choose to do so then all of your shares will be sold off and your balance will be reset.
Depending on how many times you file for bankruptcy and how long it has been since you last filed your starting balance will be:
The first time you file for bankruptcy, or if you haven't filed within the last two weeks, you will start again with a balance of 10,000
The second time you will start with a balance of 5,000
Every other time you will start with a balance of 1,000
How do I tell my friends on Facebook about my stats?
IGN SX now has Facebook integration, which allows you to post your stats to your Facebook wall/news feed. Before you can do that you need to first give us permission to post to your Facebook wall.
Go to your profile page and you will see two options. You can choose to either permanently give us permission to post to your wall or make it so that we ask for your permission each time you visit the site. We give you these two options because we understand some users might be nervous about letting us post at any time.
Once you have given us your permission then you can click the link on the profile page at any time to post your stats to your wall.
Are there any guides to help me get started?
Mark Ryan, one of the editors here at IGN, wrote a great blog post about how to play. Make sure to check it out. If you write a guide you'd like to see linked here, tweet about it with the #ignsx tag and we'll pick it up.
Where did the idea for this game come from?
In IGN we have a Hack Day twice a year, where everyone in the company gets to work on their own ideas that they think will make IGN even better! IGN SX started off as a hack by Stevo, one of our engineers, who would love it if you followed him on My IGN to let him know what you think of it.
You can read more about our latest Hack Day here.
