After having a long discussion about Calvin Johnson being a top 5 NFL WR, due to his 1300 yard season in 2008, I decided to make this a poll. Now, before you vote, let's answer a few questions.
''Nuk, you have to understand the situation, he plays for Detroit.''
Detroit is currently ranked 20th in passing offense, which is better than Cincinnati, yet Chad Johnson is ranked 8 spots higher than Calvin Johnson.
Carolina is currently ranked 28th in passing offense, yet Steve Smith is only two yards behind Calvin Johnson, but 1 TD ahead of him.
Nate Burleson is currently more productive than Calvin Johnson, and Nate Burleson plays for a team that can't even finish .500 in the NFC West, and is Burleson even the #1 WR in Seattle? That's an actual question, because I'm clueless. He almost has to be, because how is Burleson more productive than Calvin Johnson?
During Calvin Johnson's rookie season, Detroit had the 9th best passing offense, yet didn't break 1,000 yards... Something A. Boldin did during his rookie season, with the 23rd ranked passing offense. There's so many examples/players to use, but why bother? You get my point. I can list guys I've never even heard of before, that had at least one good NFL season, with worse passing offenses than the 2007/2009 Detroit Lions, that none of us even once considered as a top 10 player at WR. But again, why bother?
To say Calvin Johnson is clearly a top 5 player at his position, after one good season, is completely absurd. If anything, we should be questioning whether or not he's a bust, which I am not ready to label him as.... but it's certainly more believable, than placing this guy in the top 5. Detroit, as bad as they are, isn't exactly the worst passing offense in the NFL. They're only 12 yards per game worse than the Denver Broncos, who have a WR ranked in the top 10. Calvin Johnson isn't even ranked in the top 20. Jesus Christ, people, Nate Burleson is more productive.... I didn't even know Burleson was even in the NFL until 2 hours ago.
So, you decide.
