btw its actually smart to bring someone off the bench that you just traded for. basketball is more about knowing who your playing with and when you have a new guy you dont throw him right into the starting lineup unless hes a star

I'd think 20-9 can qualify him as a star by many standards, its not 'stars' like Kobe or LeBron or Wade are ever going to be traded.

If he doesnt know anybody on their roster, wouldnt it be easier to play LeBron (who makes life 10x for his teammates) opposed to the 2nd unit? Guys he wont ever play much with?

Its no secret that its tough for a starter to come off the bench. Hes already trying to learn a new system and disrupting timing by playing him with the 2nd unit is basically throwing him to the wolves. I think he would have had a much better game if he would have started. Hes too good of a player to go 0-12, the worst stint of his career. Avery Johnson thought it was dumb too.

You're contradicting yourself.

Why would you start a player who is adjusting to a new system? All that will do is disrupt the flow of the offense. It doesn't matter how open LeBron makes him, there won't be a flow. LeBron doesn't know where he can always count on Antawnn to be. Right now, LeBron knows where every one of his teammates will be if/when he's doubled and he just throws it out of instinct. It's what most players do.

To say he's going to average the same numbers in cleveland where he'll be a 3rd option at best, as he did in Washington where he was the #1 option most nights of his career there is just insanely ignorant. He's not going to get as many rebounds because LeBron and Shaq are 10X better rebounders than Butler and Haywood were on the wiz. He's not going to get 20 PPG because Shaq is the main inside guy, LeBron is the main driver, and West/Gibson are the main shooters on the team. No matter what Antawn does right now, he's not going to be more than a 2nd option.

Even if he is a star, you don't just throw him into the lineup. Jamison hasn't even had 1 full practice with the team yet IIRC. Howard is the new star for Washington, and they didn't start him his debut night. He barely scored, now the second game here he comes with a 20 point performance.

Thornton debut was tonight, and he didn't start. He'll be our second option on offense more than likely.

NBA teams don't start someone they just acquire from a trade, without any practice time, unless he is of LeBron/Kobe caliber.


Hell, the Mavs tried starting Butler in his debut game.. look what he did. he was something like 4-17 with 13 points.

Saying to start a guy because he wont flow with starters is shortsighted because he obviously wont flow with the 2nd unit, either. And Antawn didnt. Hes obviously wasa brought in to play with the starters, that goes without saying, so if he doesnt have any chemistry with either the starting unit or the bench, what sense does it make to play him with the 2nd unit- a group he wont play with-in order to build chemistry? It doesnt. And if he hasnt even practiced, he shouldnt be playing in the first place. Mike Brown set him up to fail tonight.

And your "Dallas tried to start Butler" statement doesnt hold any weight in your argument. You saying that he started and played bad implies that new guys should come off the bench. But Jamison came off the bench and played the worst game of his basketball career, so your statement didnt make any sense.

This. If you haven't practiced with your team yet, you shouldn't be playing in a game. They played Jamison to much in hopes he would catch fire and it backfired, but this was just one exception to the rule. I posted a bunch of examples why players should come off the bench in their first game.

There's no way Jamison would have played any better if he had started tonight. Jamison shouldn't have even played IMO. To throw a guy right in the starting mix the day after he joins your team is also setting yourself up for failure. Give him a couple days to get used to the vibe and players and let him settle down before you give him extended amounts of playing time and a starting spot.

Butler played terrible in his debut as a starter. He should have played less, and shouldn't have started.

Thornton played good in his debut as a backup, and he'll continue to grow with the unit and get better.

Howard had an alright game in his debut off the bench, and after getting accumulated with the system is now scoring 20 in one game.

The list goes on. I'm also assuming the only reason Jamison was not starting tonight was solely because he has yet to practice with the team.

No reason for him to start tonight. They're still the best in the league right now and it wasn't just Jamison that struggled tonight, the whole team did. He wasn't set up to fail, he was set up to get into their offensive system.

If I have no idea what I'm talking, why does a career 45% shooter go 0-12? You're being ignorant if you dont acknowlege that something played a factor in that. It's called having a bad game. Plenty of things cause this - nerves from being on a new team and wanting to perform more than normal, having new teammates, etc. You don't go 0-12 simply because you're a starter and aren't used to coming off the bench.

For the love of god, Jamison has been in the league how long? Just look at how many shots hes taken during his career, you can still be a 45% shooter and have several horrid nights throughout your career. It happens to everyone.
