NEW YORK -- Detroit Tigers ace Justin Verlander stood in the visitors' locker room at Yankee Stadium Friday afternoon and discussed allegations from a former major league slugger suggesting he was taking performance-enhancing drugs.

"It's moronic," Verlander said, "look at the source. It's moronic to talk about something you know nothing about and clearly ... he's not watching."

Jack Clark, a retired power hitter who has a talk radio show in St. Louis, told his audience Verlander was having a down year because the pitcher could no longer take PEDs. He accused Los Angeles Angels slugger Albert Pujols of doping as well.

"Verlander was like Nolan Ryan, he threw 97, 98, 100 miles an hour from the first inning to the ninth inning," Clark said on the air Thursday, according to a story in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He got that big contract, now he can barely reach 92, 93. What happened to it? He has no arm problems, nothing's wrong. It's just the signs are there.

The greed ... they juice up, they grab the money and it's just a free pass to steal is the way I look at it."

To which Verlander, who is 12-8 with 3.74 ERA this season, responded, "There is no merit in what he is talking about. He's not watching me pitch. Because if did he would've seen my last start, right? He's saying I'm struggling to hit 93, 94? I averaged 97 and hit a 100 in my last start. So clearly he doesn't know what he's talking about."

Verlander, a former rookie of the year and AL MVP, said he was upset and trying to bite his tongue. He declined to discuss whether he'd thought about filing a formal complaint or discussing the matter with his attorney.

"I don't really want to get into that with you guys," he said.

"It's just troublesome that in this day and age, with no merit or anything, somebody can just throw a name (around) just because he feels like, in his opinion, I'm having a down year cause I've lost velocity which clearly wasn't the case," Verlander said. "Then all of a sudden I'm having to deal with this just because I have a big name."

Clark hit 340 home runs in an 18-year career that included stops in San Francisco, Boston and St. Louis.

The stuff that he said about Verlander seems far more moronic. Pure speculation, instead of going off a named source. Anyways would it really surprise or bother anyone if what he said was true? Who cares. Game is probably still pretty dirty, bigger penalties or start looking the other way.

I would never be able to look my wife or kids in the eye if I had done what this man is accusing me of.

“I know people are tired of athletes saying they are innocent, asking for the public to believe in them, only to have their sins exposed later down the road. But I am not one of those athletes, and I will not stand to have my name and my family's name, dragged through the mud.

“I am currently in the process of taking legal action against Jack Clark and his employers at WGNU 920AM. I am going to send a message that you cannot act in a reckless manner, like they have, and get away with it. If I have to be the athlete to carry the torch and pave the way for other innocent players to see that you can do something about it, I am proud to be that person. I have five young children and I take being a role model very seriously. The last thing I want is for the fans, and especially the kids out there, to question my reputation and character.”

I won't be surprised if anyone takes PEDs, especially in the MLB. Braun can get caught, sit out for 65 games, then continue to collect millions on a guaranteed contract. I see absolutely no downside to using PEDs to get a big, long-term deal.

I would hesitate to take this guy to court if I were Pujols. I'd just leave it at "he's a moron," like Verlander did...you don't want to have this guy try and defend his case and come up with something.

Completely agree.

It's like when your GF or wife accuses you of cheating, and you really didn't, but if you defend yourself to hard it makes you look guilty.

It's more like when your GF or wife accuses you of cheating, and you really didn't THIS TIME, but you defend yourself, give your wife or GF your phone and "oh fuck!" there is a picture of some chick's snatch in your text messages with the words 'come eat it, daddy' from 10 months ago there.

If I were Pujols, I'd just let it go.

Jack Clark was like an ominious yet impotent presence as a player. I always remember him as being injured and in the dugout, yet Scully and Garagiola would make it seem like at any moment Clark could just step onto the field and bash a HR. Probably the 2nd greatest MLB player who never played, right behind John Tudor.
 
I love these Senser sports posts outside of the NFL/NCAA forum. I imagine him discovering girls or something in 1987, and not having time for anything but football after that.
 
I used to watch a lot of baseball as a kid, and religiously followed the This Week in Baseball show. Don't really watch baseball at all anymore.

Yeah, when I was a kid the only way to follow what was going on outside your own market was the NBC Game of the Week, and TWIB. Or ABC Monday Night Baseball if you go back that far, I was a little young for that but vaguely remember watching with my old man.

TWIB was great, because you'd be like "oh, so that's how the Royals came back from down four in the 8th on Thursday...man, Willie Wilson can fly!"

Sometimes TV Guide would say "TBA" for the NBC Game of the Week. I remember nervously waiting for the game to come on, hoping for the Reds. It was like Christmas when that graphic would pop up and it would be Reds vs Dodgers or something.
