Luke Rockhold vs. Keith Jardine for the Strikeforce middleweight title headlines the first Strikeforce show of 2012 on 1/7 from Las Vegas at the Hard Rock. Jardine, 36, hasn't fought at middleweight his entire career, fighting at both heavyweight and light heavyweight. He hasn't fought at all since getting a somewhat ridiculous draw (he pretty clearly lost that fight) with Gegard Mousasi in April. The reason Jardine is getting a shot is because they have a show, Rockhold was to headline, and there's nobody else. Tim Kennedy was the original idea, but he's hurt. They decided against Jacare Souza, because they had already done that match and there wasn't a wide pool available of other contenders on the roster. Jardine had decided to move to middleweight. It looks like they want to build Rockhold as a star and figure Jardine is a name fighter and a win for Rockhold would mean more against Jardine than anyone else, considering Robbie Lawler has losses to Jake Shields, Souza and Kennedy. It's interesting that when Strikeforce would have title matches that made no sense in the regard of a guy not coming off a win, or from another weight class getting a title shot, people would rail on their stupidity (often without coming up with a better idea for the spot). Here, with Zuffa in charge of the matchmaking, they ended up doing the same thing.
