Giants in the Super Bowl
Jason LaRue estimates he had about 20 concussions since playing high school football and his latest one, suffered during the brawl with Cincy (in which he was kicked in the head by Johnny Cueto), is the final draw.
The concussion Cardinals catcher Jason LaRue suffered in an August 10 on-field brawl at Cincinnati has ended his career.
LaRue, who was kicked several times by Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto in the melee, told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he was considering retirement after the season but the injury removes any doubt.
"Did I think it might be my last (season) even before what happened?" LaRue, 36, said in the interview. "Absolutely. You never know. But I know now."
Cueto was pushed against the backstop by the mass of players and lashed out with his feet, he said, because he was trying to protect himself. Some of his kicks hit LaRue in the face.
"When it first happened, I thought it was just another concussion," said LaRue, who estimates he has had "close to 20" concussions dating back to high school football. But when he couldn't drive, cook or even watch televison without symptoms, he knew this was different.
His symptoms are abating but, he said, "I'm not going to play the game and get brain-damaged just because I want to play."
