He retired holding NFL records for:

Definitely the best player in league history.
 
Jerry Rice is def on my GOAT shortlist, Jim Brown is my front runner tho. Despite playing only 9 seasons, 4 12 game season and 5 14 game seasons he still is in the top 3 of all major rushing records, which is crazy when they guys around him in the book, Payton, Smith ect played 11+ years. Not to mention he averaged 5.2 YPC for his career, thats just crazy to me

Jerry may well be/is one of the greatest receivers of the last 20 years.


there is no greatest football player of all time because each position is specialized and helps out the other.

Exactly what I was going to say.

He broke the NFL record with 22 receiving TDs (he also had 1 rushing TD, btw) in 12 games in 1987. Just his 3rd year in the league.

Jerry Rice is the greatest wide receiver to ever play the game. Period.

Someone said, "he had the greatest production, but I don't know if he was the best." The best have the most production.

As far as best football player of all time goes, it's arguable. Tough to compare across positions, but Jerry Rice dominated his position like no one else in the sport.

I'd say he's by far the best WR to ever play the game, one of the only, if not the only position where you can say, without much debate, that Player X is the GOAT. Tat being said, I think it's impossible to narrow down one person as the best player in history, its too hard to compare positions and their relative value and ability at the highest levels.
 
Lot's of positions in football, so obviously it's difficult to compare, but if the GOAT is the guy that dominated his position better than anyone else in the history of the NFL, then the answer is easy.

greatest wr? yes. he played on the team that invented the west coast offense and flourished in it. not only because that offens is meant to make recievers look good, but becasue his work ethic was 2nd to none. the greatest player ever honor cannot go to a wr simply becasue he has to depend on someone to get him the ball. i say jim brown is, but i think at the end of teh day you might be able to make a case for peyton manning. the top five would include brown, sanders (barry of course, not that clown dieon), payton, p. manning, and joe montana. i havent included defenders at this point and a case can be made for a few of them as well (deacon jones anyone? they made rules to stop him).
