Jets release Jenkins, Woody, Gholston, Taylor

The New York Daily News reports that the Jets will release NT Kris Jenkins, RT Damien Woody, DE Vernon Gholston, and OLB Jason Taylor.
None of the moves is surprising. Taylor, Jenkins, and Woody are all nearing the ends of their careers, and the latter two are coming off major surgery. Gholston has been one of the biggest draft busts in NFL history as the former No. 6 overall pick. All told, the four moves will save the Jets $24.33M in salary and bonuses, including Taylor's $10M offseason roster bonus. They will create room for free agent Santonio Holmes to be re-signed.

Sucks to see Jenkins go, he just couldn't stay healthy. Woody was alright for us last season, but he's getting up in age. Kinda surprised by Taylor being released, he played extremely well for us last year. And Gholston being released....:drunk: I really thought this would be the year he stepped up and could be a decent backup.

I really want the Jets to resign Holmes, so its good to see we're taking steps to ensure cash for him.

I think Damien Woody is very underrated. Just saying. They do need to get Santonio Holmes back though and Ducasse or someone else could easily fit in and do an adequate job with how well the other players on that line are.

I think Taylor gives it one more go, he had a good year, Woody prob won't retire... Gholston will get picked up by somebody I just have no clue who.

Jenkins could go back to Carolina, doubt that tho.

thing is, Taylor really didn't have a good year. He showed he was solid against the run but he really showed his age...he couldn't get around defenders and furthermore, was exposed as a coverage LB over the course of the season. Him crying at the the end of the year showed a lot and he maybe done.

Woody was solid...had a bit of trouble against quicker ends but did a solid job run blocking and being adequate pass blocking. Hunter came in and provided some good play and the Jets supposedly were talking contract with Hunter...we might see him and Ducasse fight it out for the RT spot.

Woody had achiillies surgery or something...doubt he's coming back IMO...

Most would be solid pickups for any team, especially depth for any team looking to compete. Gholston is probably the only one I would stay away from, but at least one team is bound to take a chance on him. Jenkins would be another high risk option, due to his knees, but he is a defensive lineman, and is bound to find work.

How about Vernon Gholston transitioning to a role like the Raiders Kamerion Wimbley as a SLB in a 4-3 under type of scheme?

I could definitely see him going to the Seahawks and playing end. I think Pete Carroll could definitely get a lot out of him (He did a great job with Raheem Brock and Chris Clemons). If not there then maybe the Eagles under Jim Washburn as a rotational pass rusher.

I could definitely see him going to the Seahawks and playing end. I think Pete Carroll could definitely get a lot out of him (He did a great job with Raheem Brock and Chris Clemons). If not there then maybe the Eagles under Jim Washburn as a rotational pass rusher.

Change will definitely do him better...I think he's better as an edge rusher in a 4-3...he's pretty strong (Rex used him a lot inside)...under this scheme he wasn't used to rush from the outside...maybe see if moving him back to his original position will spark him...he will definitely be good against the run IMO...

What? I mean... I will give you Brock I guess... but Clemons? I wouldn't say Pete had anything to do with him at all, he's always been a good pass rusher when he's on the field. Guy was awesome in the very limited snaps in Oakland and just didn't find the field in Philly, all he really needed was a coach to play him consistently. I doubt Pete Carroll "got a lot out of him" that wasn't already there.

Shefter tweeted Gholston had a $9 million escalator clause in his contract for a sack or forced fumble. In 15 games, he got zero and missed out on the money.

Been over this before... Gholston is not a LB.

He's a weakside end in a 4-3 alignment. That's the position he flourished at in college, and really the only one I cansee him having an impact at in college.

He doesn't have the hips nor the awareness to cover backs or TE's, but he's got the size and strength and quickness to be a factor as a situational pass rusher coming off the weakside in a 4-3.
