Jhonny Peralta signs with Cards- four years, $52 million

Free agent infielder Jhonny Peralta currently has a four-year contract offer worth $52 million in hand, reports MLB Network's Peter Gammons. Joel Sherman of the New York Post says he's seeking at least $56 million across four years and as much as $75 million across five years.

Peralta, 31, is one of the few free agents who can legitimately play shortstop on an everyday basis. He hit .303/.358/.457 (119 OPS+) with 11 home runs in 107 games for the Tigers this year while missing 50 games due to a Biogenesis-related suspension. Obviously teams aren't too concerned about that.

In addition to being capable at short, Peralta can play third and even dabbled in left field for Detroit after returning from his suspension. He has never been on the disabled list in his 11-year big league career and he's hit .283/.326/.506 in 45 postseason games. It's a skillset an awful lot of teams could use.

The Mets, Yankees, Orioles and Mariners have all been connected to Peralta this offseason, though it's unclear if any of them made the four-year offer. Since the Tigers did not make him a qualifying offer, teams will not have to forfeit a first round pick to sign him.

Someone is also having fun mentioning the Orioles in these. This is not their MO, to give older vets like Peralta and Beltran this much money. He's also blocked on the Orioles at short and third.

As a Mets fan, I have no problem giving him a deal...but I agree, I don't see how he is worth 14-15M/yr. That is silly. 10M would be stretching it.

This is what happens when Elvis Andrus gets $15M. Every other JAGGY SS wants 15M.

10 years ago we were looking at the first $100 million contracts and preparing for what A-Rod and Manny were going to demand.

To put Peralta into perspective, it would be better to look at the deal the Orioles gave to Miguel Tejada back in the 2004 off-season, six years at $72 million. It's laughable then, and it's laughable now.

Unreal. I can't believe the Orioles are still mentioned in this, and there is no way I'd give him that money to play for us. I'd rather spend more to grab someone else, or bank it for an extension. I guess the extra money this off-season is going to everyone's head.

So yeah if Crads are the team expected to sign, I'm thinking 4/60, 5/75.

I think those three will be in the $100-$150 million spot, that's not going to change. What's changing are what middle of the road players like Peralta are going to get. The rumored deals for him are absurd.

At least you know you can move him out of short by that third or fourth year. I still don't like this deal, but even if he goes back to 2012 numbers, he's still an upgrade over what you guys had last year, just at a whole lot more money.

I don't use Tapatalk, but if it's always been like that, there probably isn't anything we can do now. My guess would be they will eventually catch up with things and we'll get an update where you can view Tweets and other stuff.

At least the Cards didn't have to give up the first rounder too. Like Woy said, 4 years is too long, but god damn what an offensive improvement over Kozma. 4/52 is not*that bad in today's MLB.

Mozeliak seems to be quick on the trigger and you gotta like it. Love the Bourjos trade and the Peralta signing pretty much shores up all our big moves for the offseason.
