Jim Brown unimpressed by 'ordinary' Trent Richardson

There are plenty of teams interested in the services of Alabama star Trent Richardson, but the greatest rusher of them all doesn't get the appeal.

In a guest spot on ESPN Radio (via PFT), Jim Brown downplayed Richardson's game and lamented the NFL's move toward a more pass-happy culture.

“I’m not overwhelmed with it,” Brown said of the prospect his former team, the Cleveland Browns, could select Richardson. “The problem is that he’s ordinary. I think he’s ordinary.”

What's ordinary about Richardson? "The size, the speed, his moves," he said.

Brown suggested that if Richardson couldn't start ahead of Saints running back Mark Ingram at Alabama (another guy that bores him), there's no reason to think he'll be a better player than Ingram in the pros.

Brown doesn't see many impact rushers at all in the modern NFL.

“When I watch football today I see a game of quarterbacks,” he said. “Protecting quarterbacks, throwing the ball, short passes, long passes, all kinds of passes.”

Brown might come off as a crank, but hey, it's Jim Brown. The man can say what he wants.

Brown is right. I dont see Richardson as being a 'special' back, either. Or Ingram.

This is the wrong era to place a premium on RB's, too. Brown is also right about that. I hope Cleveland takes Richardson, because I don't want the Rams to take him.

IMO that's a much larger issue. The game is a passing league and considering how teams are going with these 2 back systems I don't see the point in selecting a runningback in the 1st round only to see him lose value like a new car.

2009- Knowshon Moreno first RB selected (12th overall)
2008- Darren McFadden first RB selected (4th overall)
2007- Adrian Peterson first RB selected (7th overall)

If Richardson does indeed go to the Browns, he better be special. It is a waste to spend a pick right now on a back that high.

I don't think he is special, but I do think he has the ability and potential to be every good as Marshawn Lynch. Maybe not worthy of the #3 pick overall, but if he can put up Lynch like numbers, performances, and effort then I think the fans and organization will be happy they picked him.

IMO that's a much larger issue. The game is a passing league and considering how teams are going with these 2 back systems I don't see the point in selecting a runningback in the 1st round only to see him lose value like a new car.

This league is ripe for a dominant runner. While only a few talents are out there , no teams are willing to commit to a RB and running game when its so damn easy to pass. Guys like Jamal Lewis and Sean Alexander were rushing for 200 yards and 25 tds not too long ago. Its really not that hard to pop a 4-5 yard run in this league.

Thats really all it is. Effort. You give a guy the carries , and if the guy is an effort runner he should do well. Too many teams splitting carriers like idiots and too many Bush like softies. Look at the Cowboys Felix Jones oozes talent cant do shit. Rookie comes in and humiliated him on effort alone. A mild talent like Marion Barber lasted 7 years because he was a hard head who bulldozed a league of shitty tacklers.

No need to waste a first rounder , especially one who's not special. That said he can easily turn into a top 5 runner with good blocking , mild QBing , and enough carries.

Richardson is better than Ingram. It's foolish to say he "couldn't beat him out" for playing time, because that's just not how things worked out. Richardson was a freshman when Ingram was already an upperclassman and had already established himself as a productive player.

Richardson is more talented, but that doesn't mean he was going to supplant the incumbent at a premier program. That's a silly reason to knock him.

It seems like I was right, too. Richardson would be every bit as good as Lynch if he would hit the hole quicker, run harder, break more tackles, and wasn't such a pussy.
