The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released quarterback Josh Freeman on Thursday, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.


The team tried to trade the quarterback but wasn't able to find a taker. By releasing Freeman, the Buccaneers are obligated to pay the quarterback all $6.2 million he was owed in remaining salary this season.

Freeman, who was taken 17th overall by the Buccaneers in the 2009 draft, was benched in favor of rookie Mike Glennon prior to the Bucs' 13-10 loss to Arizona this past Sunday. In 60 career games, Freeman has thrown for 13,534 yards, 80 touchdowns and 66 interceptions.

The NFL Players Association is investigating how Freeman's presence in Stage 1 of the league's substance-abuse program became public earlier this week. On Tuesday, Bucs coach Greg Schiano was asked by reporters if he was the source of the information and said, "absolutely not."

In a statement released after the initial reports of his presence in the NFL's substance abuse program Monday night, Freeman said he has a prescription for Adderall to treat ADHD; however, last year he inadvertently took Ritalin, which triggered a positive test. As a result of the positive test, he submitted to frequent drug screenings and placement in Stage 1 of the league's drug program.

He also said he has passed 46 league-administered drug tests, but Monday's disclosure could undermine the Buccaneers' attempts to trade him.

Freeman was fined twice in the past month for conduct detrimental to the team, according to an SI.com report. The website reported he will appeal the fines.

Interestingly enough, Ira Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune posted this on Twitter this morning:

"Contrary to popular belief, the Buccaneers have engaged in less media manipulation than the Josh Freeman camp in the past month. Far less."

Some speculation that Freeman may be the "leak" so that the Bucs had no choice but to release him. That leaked info all but killed any chance of a trade, he can play the role of victim and someone eventually takes a flyer on him. Not saying it is the truth, but, interesting info none the less. Interested to see more on this.

I'd never release one of these guys. I'd just suspend them for conduct detrimental to the team without pay for as long as the NFLPA would let me and make the guy work the worst PR assignments I could think of.

Make them earn that money.. By doing magic shows for the elderly every Saturday night.

I don't think his career is over, but if he is actually gay, it would be better for his career and real life just to say so and get it over with. He will get a second chance regardless.

All that said, I put this current situation on Schiano, not Freeman. When hired Schiano had a top 15-20 QB who he played a big role in turning into today's Freeman.
It's pretty clear Schiano was never a Freeman guy. He should have traded Freeman the second he knew that and gotten some value. Same way Cleveland did with Trent Richardson.
Instead, Schiano dragged Freeman's name through the mud, got nothing in return and is handing his pro career to a QB who may or may not be Dan McGwire 2.0.

I think Schiano is a terrible coach but come on dave.. Freeman is shit. And arguing he's a Top 20 QB .. which is a more optimistic way of saying he's in the bottom 12.. is hilarious.

I am saying, when Schiano was hired, Freeman was a top 20 quarterback. I am not saying he is now.
