Their biggest problem was defense, something Kelly was unable to establish at Cincinnati. Cincinnati has one of the worst defenses in college football. I like Kelly, but I don't think he'll do much better for Notre Dame. Can't see them winning more than 7 games next season.

They're pretty similar IMO with regards to offensive philosophy. The only difference is the head coaching experience/success that Kelly brings to the table. If he's the man, he definitely needs to get the defense turned around.

Depends on your definition of relevant, I suppose. There's definitely no shortage of ND headlines through the season.

I was thinking that too. The only difference is Kelly's KNOWN ability to win at this level. They lost someone who was close to the players, and IMO Clausen and Tate might have stayed if Weis stayed. If that happens, ND has a shot at a NC in 2010. But I'm an ND fan and I'll support whatever the AD decides. In this case, it's Brian Kelly.

We could easily win 9+ games next season with our schedule (Army, Navy, W. Michigan, Tulsa, etc.)

You told me the same thing this season. :shifty: Don't see it happening. And get out of here with the "if Weis, Clausen and Tate stay we could play for the NC" bullshit. You went 6-6 this year with all of them. Maybe improve and get to 8-9 wins if they all stayed, but national title? Puh-lease.

As for relevance padman, I don't mean headlines cause they will be talked about no matter how good or how bad they are. I really meant as a great to elite program on the national stage again.

Those games are precisely why the next coach needs to build a good defense. It's hard to imagine a team scoring 30 points per game and still losing six contests.

Yeah I mean, look at Kelly's defense in Cincinnati. It's horrible.

We'll see what happens though. I still like the hire from ND's standpoint, but I don't see them living up to the expectations next year that they were supposed to meet this year.

ND could be in a BCS bowl sooner with only moderate improvement on the defensive side of the ball.

Why wouldn't he? I'm sure ND wants the next coach out recruiting as soon as possible, which would require Kelly to officially become ND's head coach before the Sugar Bowl.

Cinci's defense this year was still more than respectable seeing as they lost 10 starters. The previous two seasons under Kelly I believe that the Bearcats had very respectable defenses(in the nations Top 40) so I think it's a bit of a stretch to assume Kelly can't be the coach of a good defensive team given his recruiting resources at ND and his ability to bring in a proven defensive coordinator.

I like the hire. Can't disagree too much with it, for some reason over the last few days I was really starting to warm up to Edsall but I think he was the "trendy" guy rather than the proven guy. It's been over 20 years since ND has hired a proven winner as HC so it's a good feeling.

I'm not going to start making predictions about W/L's next season but I'm happier than the day they hired Ty so that's a plus.

Brian Kelly is one of the best coaches in America, IMO.

To all saying he can't coach a defense: Cincy had a top 25 defense in 2008, then proceeded to lose 10 starters and shift to a 3-4 defense. Kelly played LB in college and was a defensive coordinator before, so I think he knows you need a good defense as well as a good offense.

That said, he has always struck me as a guy with questionable character and motives. But hey, if he wins, who cares?
