Not that surprising, no.

He may retire before the end of it anyway. Even if he doesn't, he's still a very effective player. Definitely someone you want around to mentor the recent draftees in Sullinger and Melo.

I thought he was retiring. I felt like he was leaving everything on the court. I can see him continue to start next year and then slowly come off the bench. KG is in good shape so playing into 40 seems okay.

Christ, you're Boston, not Sacramento. Why do you assume big names wouldn't come to Boston? You could very easily (with money) get guys to play alongside Rondo and for a few more years Pierce. It's one of the most historic franchises in the NBA. I don't think you'd have a huge problem getting proven players to come if you have the money to give them. Instead Boston has chose to pay a 36-year old and a 34-year old a combined $27 million last year and $30 million in 13-14 before Pierce comes off the books.

Obviously Boston isn't getting a big name guy this year, but why do the 3 years?

You're going to pay big money for someone in his late 30s that despite an end of the year spike is physically breaking down. Not always the most wise move even if he is "a beast" The move to C gave him a quick boost but if you honestly think he's going to play like that for the rest of his contract you're lying to yourself.

I guess it depends how you want your Celtics to be going forward. I was under the impression it was a new guard, rebuilding around Rondo but its essentially an extension of The Big 3 but without Ray Allen (for now) that to me indicates they are still in a win-now mode. Boston was only one game away from the NBA finals, losing to the eventual champs. Why would they blow that up and start all over? I say keep going for another title with this team as long as you can.

Plus, they have key young players coming back who were out last season, Avery Bradly and Jeff Green.

Its hard to form a contending team, theres no guarantee they will be back to contending if they start over with a brand new squad.

Note: 3 years is too long for KG, but they are probably counting on him retiring on his own before then.

It did, but dont forget the Celtics had injuries too. No Avery Bradley, no Jeff Green...Ray Allen & Paul Pierce both banged up.

And Derrick Rose might not even play next season.

If they are looking to try to contend for 2 or so more year though, chances are that for $10 mil. no one getting paid that much will help the team as much as KG is capable of doing.

It's not like he can't retire after a year or two. If he plays past Pierce's final year of his contract I'd be shocked. No big free agents want to come to Boston, and the team still has some money to work with.

I'd rather KG return so he can teach Melo and Sully, instead of investing in JaVale McGee or Chris Kaman.

Realistically, the Celtics aren't winning shit the next two years so it's not like this is a bad move. In two years, see where you are at with Rondo/Bradley/Sully/Melo and go from there.

The only way I was for rebuilding was if you traded Pierce/Allen and KG retired. Since you got no ROI, just hold onto them.

The only problem with bringing KG, and possibly Allen now, back, is the team's not bad enough now to rebuild properly, if that makes sense. Let's be real here. The East is still a bit of a joke of a conference. You keep the team together and add more depth (i.e. Jeff Green coming back, Sullinger, full year of Bradley etc., random FA signing), and it's still a what, 3 or 4 seed playoff team in the EC? Maybe 5-6 at worst? Veryyyy outside chance at another title run. So, it's just basically a 2-year pipe dream/last hurrah, while still being mildly successful, but by not totally rebuilding they're missing out on two years of lottery picks to jump start the process. Of course, no Boston-based organization these days would ever do that, it's all about keeping the bandwagon satisfied by keeping the big names around and selling tickets.

I don't know what to think of it really. Part of me likes that I'm not going to have to go through another god awful rebuilding phase for another couple years, but the practical side of me hates it. Blegh.
