He writes one perfectly fine and entirely accurate half of an article summarizing the HBO series "Luck", before the second half of the article delves into either a really lame and unfunny parody, or really weird and obtuse trying-to-hard-to-be-cute criticism of why the show doesn't work. Since I can't really figure out what he's trying to do, let me just say that the article sucks and leave it at that.

I enjoy viewing scenarios that are simultaneously active and passive — “active” in the sense that the story is detailed and engrossing and idea-driven, but “passive” in the sense that what I’m trying to absorb is so dense and obtuse that the plot mechanics evaporate into an incomprehensible wall of propulsive dialogue.

That sentence reminds me of writing a paper on a topic that you didn't study at all, so you just throw big words around and hope the teacher doesn't notice that you have no fucking clue what you are talking about.

Anyway, the article basically theorizes that Luck is doing bad ratings because people hate horses, and he cites successful series like Deadwood & Game of Thrones to reinforce his point. It's neither funny, if that's what he is going for, nor makes any sense, if he's trying to be serious.

Not ashamed to say that 'I don't get it'. He really sucks.
 
No one hates horses. I think its more we've seen the horse racing angle be played out. However this is Grantland, so they can't just write something simple like that. Instead it has to be some wacky half serious half joke style article that makes ridiculous analogies and metaphors. It truly is a Bill Simmons wet dream.

If you want to read something he wrote being totally sincere which sucks just as bad, check out his review of the Van Halen album. It's so shitty and overwrought. Between that and the self-important tone he can never avoid taking, his writing is insufferable.
