Week 1: Vs Buffalo

New Mexico State outlasts Buffalo behind a great defensive performance

NMSU HB Seth Smith breaking off a long run. He had 95 yards on 20 carries.​

Coach Harris announced earlier in the year that he would take over as head coach for the New Mexico State Aggies. He knew coming into the job that he had a lot of work to do and it was probably going to be a long year.

The team practiced hard and worked on executing the easy stuff more than anything else and this first game showed that work payed off. It took the Aggies over a quarter and a half to put the first points up on the board, a field goal with 2:30 left in the 2nd quarter.

The Aggie defense was outstanding the entire first half, until 3 seconds left in the 1st half. Buffalo dropped back and threw up a hail mary. That was when the New Mexico defense had a lapse in coverage and Buffalo went into the half up 7-3.

The 2nd half saw New Mexico retake he lead with a 25 yard post pass to Hantley and they never looked back. On two separate occasions Buffalo sustained drives that ended in fumbles. The first fumble came on a screen pass where the Buffalo wide receiver was absolutely crushed 10 yards after he caught the ball. The 2nd fumble was inside the New Mexico 5 yard line where the runningback was lit up and New Mexico recovered.

With 2 minutes left in the game, the score was still 10-7 in favor of New Mexico. The Buffalo QB, who had been good all game, simply fell apart. The first was an interception thrown to star defensive tackle John Finau, which was taken back to the house. On the very next possession, another pick was thrown and was taken back to the house and with 1 minute remaining the score was 24-7. The game ended on a 3rd interception and that was all she wrote.

All the technical work payed off. Besides two penalties and a lapse in coverage at the end of the 1st half, New Mexico played as well as you could. There were no sacks allowed, no fumbles lost, and no interceptions thrown and now its onto the next week to see if New Mexico can have a repeat performance.

New Mexico State Stuns the World

Fleming and company kept the OSU defense off balance all day​

If the game between NMSU and OSU was played 100 times, OSU would win 99. Unfortunately, this was the 1 that got away. Ohio State's high powered offense was shut down time and time again as the stout NMSU continued their war path.

New Mexico quickly took the lead after OSU fumbled the opening kickoff. Smith caught an 8 yard pass from Fleming and it was 7-0 with a stunned OSU crowd looking on and a NMSU team going nuts on the sideline. That feeling rapidly left as Pryor and OSU marched down field and scored in 5 plays to tie the game at 7-7. OSU would tack on a field goal to take a 10-7 lead with 3 minutes to go in the first half.

That was the last time OSU would be putting points on the scoreboard as the New Mexico defense shut down every pass, every run, and every drive OSU threw at them.

With 24 seconds to go Fleming handed off to star running back Seth Smith. Smith took the ball and followed his tackle through the line. The offense tackle took out the remaining saftey and Smith scampered into the endzone for a 14-10 lead at half. Midway through the 3rd NMSU hit a FG to go up 17-10 and it was all defense the rest of the way.

New Mexico forced 3 turnovers (2 fumbles, 1 interception) on the day. It seemed as if OSU wasn't ready for the game and it showed. The only blemish that New Mexico had was a Smith fumble early in the 2nd quarter that didn't produce anything for Ohio State.

Tulane wins OT thriller on the road

Tulane 2nd string running back Darwka. 4 carries 127 yards and 2 scores.​

It only took 1 minute for the New Mexico State Aggies to be staring at a 14-0 hole. Tulane scored quickly thanks to 2 defensive touchdowns, a 57 yard fumble recovery and a 48 yard interception return. The only question on Coach Harris' mind was, "How is my team going to respond?" His players didn't disappoint.

The NMSU offense rebounded and scored on a 79 run from Seth Smith to make it 14-7 but Tulane ended the 1st quarter up 21-7 after their "money play" (in this case the wildcat) netted them a 79 yard run.

After the 1st quarter, NMSU slowly began taking momentum back. They shut out the Tulane offense and put up 10 points to end the half down 21-17.

The 2nd half was not nearly as high scoring. NMSU kicked a field goal to make it a 1 point game at 21-20. That was when Tulane went to their money play once again and scored a touchdown from 29 yards out. 28-20 heading into the 4th.

Hope was all but lost as the NMSU offense could muster up long drives but could never punch it in. With 1:11 to go in the game, backup runningback Robert Clay punched it in from 3 yards out to make it 28-26. On the ensuing 2 point conversion, star runningback Seth Smith ran it in to tie the game with just over a minute to go.

Tulane tried to get some late game heroics going but didn't come up with anything. In fact, Tulane got lucky as they threw a hail mary with 25 seconds to go and the NMSU defender dropped an easy interception. To overtime they go.

In OT, NMSU was on the offensive first but they were held to a FG. When Tulane got the ball, they ran their money play one more time and with such splendid blocking the Tulane back scampered down to the 2 yard line. From there it was just a halfback dive and that was all she wrote.

After the game Coach Harris had this to say. "They really only had one play that killed us. It didn't matter that we KNEW it was coming, we couldn't get into their backfield. In overtime, we sent the house and shifted the defensive line to the side the back was running to and all 11 of our guys were blocked. It was ridiculous. Honestly, we outplayed them and if it wasn't for 2 unlucky turnovers, we would have won. The only thing I am truly mad about is the fact that my team let a fantastic game by Seth to go to waste."
