[Y]ou know how much you can earn off touring, right? Big artists can make anywhere from $50 millon for one cycle of two years' touring. Giant artists make upwards of $100 million. Make music--then tour. It's just the way it is today.

Neil Young:

"Piracy is the new radio," said legendary musician Neil Young at The Wall Street Journal's D: Dive Into Media conference. "That's how music gets around. That's the real world for kids."

Norah Jones:

"If people hear it, I'm happy. I'm not going to say go steal my album, but I think it's great that young people who don't have a lot of money can listen to music and be exposed to new things," said singer-songwriter Norah Jones. "But I also understand it's not ideal for the record industry, and a lot of young artists who won't make any music off their album sales, but at least they can tour."

Jack White:

"I don't mind [piracy] that much, really," explained former White Stripes member Jack White. "I wouldn't do it because I really need to have the album in my hands--preferably the vinyl. I like to have the artwork and the notes and the lyrics. When it's on the internet, it feels like it's invisible. You think that it's there, but you can't see any moving parts and that's somehow disappointing."

Shakira:

"I like what's going on because I feel closer to the fans and the people who appreciate the music," Colombian music star Shakira said in reference to illegal file-sharing. "It's the democratization of music in a way. And music is a gift. That's what it should be, a gift."

Liam Gallagher:

"Downloading's the same as what I used to do--I used to take the charts of the songs I liked [off the radio]. I don't mind it," said former Oasis frontman, Liam Gallagher. "I hate all these big, silly rock stars who moan--at least they're f*cking downloading your music...and paying attention, know what I mean? You should f*cking appreciate that--what are you moaning about?..."

Nelly Furtado:

"If you love music, you're going to make it anyway, and you're going to find an audience," explained pop artist Nelly Furtado. "And you might not make, like, millions of dollars, but you'll make enough money to have a living and have a family and have a house and a car. And I don't know. Maybe it's limited. Maybe the clock is ticking."

I think it's great. I love it. I think it's brilliant, and I'll tell you why. Music should be shared. I believe that this is how music turned into, like, some crazy business. Now, the only part about music that I dislike is the business that is attached to it. Now, if music is free, then there is no business. There is just music. So, I like it. I think that we should share it. It's okay. If one person buys it, it's totally cool. Burn it up. Share it with your friends. I don't care. I don't care how you hear it, as long as you hear it. As long as you come to my show and, like, have a great time and listen to the live show, it's totally cool. I don't mind. I'm happy that they hear it.

Gaga is one of those who can make $100 million touring, I wouldn't imagine she's worried. And how concerned should Neil Young be with it, when the peak of his popularity was long before anyone was using the internet.

But it's reality. The music business is even more sink-or-swim than ever thanks to piracy. Shit disappears faster and the cream still rises to the top.

But it's reality. The music business is even more sink-or-swim than ever thanks to piracy. Shit disappears faster and the cream still rises to the top.

The record labels should produce less shitty music, and monetize it in a way that is not insulting to the consumer, then maybe they'd make money like other industries that didn't get left behind. I support my favorite artists through following them on twitter, visiting their site, downloading their music from their official sites, going to their shows, telling my friends and family to check them out, etc.

If I hear some shit that I like, I'm going to support it in the ways that I can afford. No different than any other business. But the artists are smartening up and cutting out the middle man, because the listeners did that a long time ago.
