It's because he's from Alabama. Not saying he's not a respectful person, but you can't just off of that because in the South everything is "yes, sir", "yes, ma'am", etc.

You could see a store getting robbed down there and the conversation would go like this:

Robber: Give me all your money!!!

Store Owner Lady: All of my money?

Robber: Yes, ma'am.

Store Owner Lady: Here is all of my money.

Robber: Thank you ma'am, have a good one.

Don't doubt it. Watch the Cops shows when they are in the south. Cops will beat the shit out of a guy for trying to run them down with a car, throw him in the back of a cruiser, and every time they ask him a question or answer one it's "Yes, sir", "No, sir". It's becomes just a reflex after a while.

I moved from New York to Memphis when I was like 12 and whenever I said just "yes" to any adult they'd immediately "don't address me that way". No matter who you spoke to. The guy at McDonalds would tell you the same thing.

I moved back to New York now and I'm saying "yes, sir" and all that to people and they look at me crazy.
