This is the perfect answer. There's no guarantees with it but it helps when pitchers come after you because they'd rather pitch around another guy.

There are various studies that suggest it doesn't matter at all, but we all know that this is bullshit, because we've all seen teams go after lesser hitters batting in front of studs, and we've all seen studs get pitched around in big spots when there is a bum hitting behind them.

In extreme cases I could see it having an effect. Sure, having Bonds slugging .800 behind you in 2000 is going to change things drastically. But as a whole, it's bunk IMO.

Yes, but only to an extent.

If you're like Pujols, ARod or Bonds in their primes, then no matter what, you're probably getting walked.

But lineup protection does more to protect the team than one player. If the rest of your team can't hit for squat except for the one superstar, I'm walking him every time he comes to the plate. But if you have guys in the lineup that can hit, then all the pitcher is doing is hurting himself by walking the big bopper.

I don't think the concept is overrated as much as it is misunderstood.
